I work at a place where i have to cut shrink wrap a lot and do various other tasks and i am looking to buy a solid inexpensive knife that can be up to the task but not be so nice i get upset if i lose it. Probabbly a straight edge, don't really need serrations but a little doesn't matter; not a lot of serrations.

Are there any top choices in the $30 or under range or can i get a good knife for that little or less? I like folders with blaze sizes of at least 3 inches, closed length doesn't matter.

Currently i have a Kershaw Tanto Blur 1670 that i consider "too nice" to risk losing at work or dull up. I know its not an expensive knife but its nice to me.

any recommendations?

Ontario RAT 1, Byrd Cara Cara, Spyderco Tenacious, Ka-bar Large Dozier, Kershaw Skyline.

Off the top of my head:

Kershaw Needs Work
Spyderco Tenacious or Persistence

Looking on eBay, they might be $2-3 over budget.

Blur is not expensive. But you are looking again for something very similar. So there is no guarantee that the new knife would turn up again too nice to be used. I think what you probably need is a used knife. So try to find something here on Exchange, something already used, with scratches. That would be much better than buying a new cheap knife.

I got a Byrd Cara Cara and I think that's a great option for a good and affordable modern working knife.

Kershaw Needs Work is inexpensive (Walmart has them for $36.00) Mine holds a decent edge and is really easy to sharpen. A good solid work knife.

I have a Spyderco Byrd Wings knife. It's a folder with one serrated and one straight edge blade. Very sturdy, 8Cr13MoV steel blade (not great but very good) 3.5" long or so, G-10 handle. I really like this knife and it's in the price range you mentioned.

What about a Buck 110? I can sell you one nib for $ 30.00 it comes with a nylon sheath plus $6.95 shipping which includes insurance. This is a bladeforums only deal so send me a PM if you are interested.
Thanks
Paul

I would recommend a Kershaw Mini Cyclone. Can easily be had under $30. Blade is 3 3/16". Easy to open, etc.....

Kershaw Clash
Kershaw Oso Sweet
Gerber LST Magnum or Jr.
Case Sodbuster or Sodbuster Jr.
Byrd Cara Cara (as mentioned)
Ka-Bar Dozier Folding Hunter
Buck 110 EcoLite
Buck Vantage (Large)
Buck BuckLite Max (Medium)

If you need a good work knife, I would go for a needs work also, but I would pick up a blem from Kershawguy in the dealer section for $25 for the colored ones. Cheap and easy to sharpen.

Timberline Workhorse. This knife is very solid. It's a "sleeper" that does not get much said about it. Lockup is great.
You can find them for 25 dollars.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner. Give that man a cigar.

I know there are lots of good knives in this price range but my only experience in this range is the Ontario RAT 1 Folder and it flat out rocks for under $30. Big time. And that's coming from a knife snob who never thought he'd EVER own an Ontario knife.

I think i will try the Kershaw needs work or the Ka Bar Dozier. They both appear to be what i am looking for.

Which one do you think would be higher quality or are they comparable?
