so.. as of now i have two SAK's.

I love them both but im really not familiar with all the different options out there.
trying to navigate the Victorinox website does nothing but give me a headache...

Im hoping some of you all with a lot more knowledge could give me a hand!

I have both the tinker and the explorer. love them both.. but what i am after is something like a tinker with a saw and scissors. any help with models?

Yes the Victorinox site is quite useless. I usually browse SAK wiki. http://www.sakwiki.com/ to find the types of SAKs and what they have. A super tinker will add scissors to the tinker, but not a saw. I cant think of what model would also have the saw but there is probably one.

Edit: A fieldmaster is a tinker with saw and scissors. http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Fieldmaster I dont know if thats a discontinued one or not though.

Huntsman (has corkscrew) or Fieldmaster (has phillips head)

Fieldmaster can be found on the internet, Huntsman can be found at target and probably wallyworld. Both are great knives. The Huntsman seem to be in the top 3 favorite SAKs for outdoor use (along with the Farmer, Trekker)

Fieldmaster it is indeed. :) It's good for those who want the capability of the Huntsman but finds more uses for a Phillips screwdriver than a corkscrew + eyeglass screwdriver.

Not that it matters that much since its basically the same knife...but I have a huntsman "boyscout" edition and it replaces the corkscrew with a Philips. But its the exact same as a fieldmaster

Think about the tools you will definitely need.

For me that was: Knife, and scissors.

Then things that could come in handy: Screwdiver both flat and philips.

Then go from there...

Things I've learned:

No matter what anyone says, a corkscrew you don't need to edc... period. Unless your a sommelier or something.

Toothpick is ok at best. And the tweezers I absolutely hate. Get better ones. I don't really understand why they are so popular, they are really flimsy IMO. But YMMV.

You do not need a saw, you will know if you do lol And trust me if you do it won't be a tiny one..

File is actually pretty handy, didn't think it would be but it is.

I'm sure others can fill in on their experience... Good Luck!!

You might want to check out the Victorinox Ranger, it is pretty well priced and has a saw, scissors, file and I think everything that the Tinker has except the Phillips screwdriver on the back-layer. I would prefer to use the screwdriver on the can opener than the back-layer Phillips though - obviously the Explorer in-line Phillips is much better.

I use much the same method in choosing a SAK...and through that I've settled on the Vic Compact or the Wenger Evo 14/Traveler. As a college student, my necessities are a blade, scissors, bottle opener/occasional screwdriver, and yes, a corkscrew. That thing comes in handy since I never know when I'll run into an errant wine bottle. ;) Both the Wenger and the Victorinox have different tools that I like in this case...the Wenger offering a full can opener, an awl, and a nail file, and the Vic offering a pen in the scales, which comes in handy more often than not. Plus that odd hook tool that I have yet to find a use for. The toothpick I use more as a pick for cleaning things than I ever do hygiene, and the tweezers are a handy item to have in lieu of full sized tweezers.

SAK style saws may not be ideal for chopping down trees, but for small DIY projects, I personally find them quite handy.

I'm in college too!! But I've found the spirit to be best for me, but I don't edc it. I just carry my sebenza ^0^ Use to work in a restaurant and had a Fireman, only thing that ever got used was the blade so I got a dedicated knife. But yea, a lot of it really depends on what your personal needs are...

Gotta say though never had the hook tool or used it before, but I rather like it for some reason...
