This is my first post in this subforum, so try to take it easy on me. :o I'm looking for a splitting axe or maul. I prefer to buy tools that will last from good makers, so price is not the largest consideration to me. Accordingly, I have a roughly $200 budget. Which ones should I consider? Wetterlings? Hults? Gransfors?

Never used any of their mauls so I can't help. I have the Gransfors SFA and it is nice. I also have the Husqvarna Forest Axe. It's nice as well.
Council Tool is good quality in an American product made in NC. Council is easy on the wallet too. Axe or sledge eye in 6lb or 8lb heads. Around $40-50 locally here.

I overlooked them. I'll check them out online.

I'll sell you one I just refinished if you want. It's a super clean US made Warren 6lb maul head on a new 36" (34.5" now) handle. All linseed oiled and sharpened. It should be as good or better than any other option. I'd sell it for $50 shipped.

You can see it here-

What post number in that really long thread? When I clicked on the link it took me to page 1.
Post2155 on pg108. I found it. And I like it.

My biggest gripe with Council Tools is that 1/4" aluminum wedges that they use. But I'm always looking for an excuse to rehang a head anyways. After all that is part of the fun of caring for your tools.

Definitely go this route, Jb is a great guy to deal with and always finds great stuff and does a great job restoring it 👍

If you want something new also check out stihl and husqvarna both sell nice maul for around $100
Jblyttle is practically giving that maul away at $50
