I like the Paramilitary 2 just not the steel used. S30V. Won't go into reasons for this, but what is another Spyderco knife that is almost the same as the Paramilitary 2, when it comes to g-10 handle scales, blade shape, and the length of the Paramilitary 2.

I'd say to get a Para 2 sprint run with a different steel. I have one in CTS-20CP and it cuts like a monster. Sprint Para 2's show up on the exchange fairly often.

k thanks to the both of you. i just hope i can find sprint runs through online vendors i really don't buy or trade on here. come here for research and questions.

Maybe check out a Manix 2, they're similar in many ways but different too. The newer models are switching to S30V but the older models were 154CM, if you like that steel better. This knife also saw quite a few sprints, but will likely be expensive on the secondary market.

S30V is a great steel, but since that won't do keep a check on this room, or the spyderco forum, and you won't miss the next Para 2 exculsive or sprint run

They had some of the M390 exclusives just a week or two ago. They still say on their site that they will get more. Go pre-order one, if you don't mind waiting a bit that is.

I can't think of another knife that is alot like the Para2, and I think one would be worth the wait. You may not though.

If you don't get a pm2 sprint take a look at the Superleaf. It's comparable in size, has the same lock, and G10. It does have the leaf shaped blade though. The blade is VG10. It was discontinued but it's still pretty easy to find.

As mentioned, a Sprint Para2 is your best bet followed by a Superleaf (which has the comp lock). If you don't mind losing the comp lock and don't mind going a bit smaller the Native5 comes in S35VN (not that much different than S30V though).

I'm curious what your reservations are about S30V are, that would keep you from a knife as good as the Para 2...?

There's the superleaf. G10, compression lock, 4mm thick VG10 in a leaf shape blade. I love my superleaf, way more then my manix 2 xl, the liner jimping create nearly instant hot spots for me. The manix 2 xl is best suited for gloved hands IMO.

There's a lot of S30V hate these days. I personally don't get it. It's easy to sharpen, holds a working edge for a good long while, doesn't rust easily. What's not to like? It doesn't hold a shaving edge as long as VG10, but I don't EDC a folder to shave with.

I don't hate S30V, but I have rolled a 30 degree inclusive edge on more than one occasion. I just added a micro bevel to my Sage 3 that rolled pretty badly. I personally like exploring new steels, but certainly would not avoid a knife I like because it has S30V.

Wow what are you cutting that you're rolling S30V? My experience is that it usually chips before it rolls especially at 30 inclusive. I sharpen all my S30V knives at 30 and i never get rolling, and i cut a lot of cardboard. I'm all about trying out new steels but I think it's a very good "standard" steel. We knife people are a spoiled bunch...30 years ago people would've sold their soul for a steel as good as S30V.

Not sure, was surprised to see it there when I pulled it out the other day. I immediately asked my wife if she used it, she says no, I am not so sure:D I think one time it was a zip tie, those are bad news for knives. I think knives almost always roll rather than chip. Chipping would mean you lost a piece of your knife, rolling is just deformation which is most common on pocket knives as they are reasonably tough enough to deform rather than chip. Rolling would be preferable to chipping in most cases, as rolling means no lost metal. I have also rolled VG10, 8Cr13MoV, and maybe chipped ZDP-189.

I would say my S30Vs are more likely to roll than chip too. But I don't doubt others have different experiences. I think it really depends on what you are cutting, where you are cutting it, what you might hit while cutting (staples, etc). Anyway though, S30V has never done anything but impress me! Love that steel!!
