looking for a strong knife

Are you looking for a fixed blade or a folding knife? How long of a blade? We need details. :)

If you've ever been anywhere near a tornado or a hurricane, you know how powerful the wind can be. Maybe a blade of wind is the strongest tactical !?

Welcome to Bladeforums! :D

The usual answer to your question would be, a heavily built folder like the currently hyped Manix or the perennial favorite Al Mar SERE 2000. There are others in that class, also. For a fixed blade in that price range, wow, the possibilities are almost endless.

The are different ways of assessing strength. Some of them depend on the materials used or the design. Some of them depend on what the knife will be used for and where -- dry land or salt water, a lot of hard cutting or maybe prying.

Some depend on what "tactical" means, not exactly the most clearly defined term in our lexicon.

Whatcha looking for?

Hey..

welcome..

Just as Esav said,, "Whatcha lookin for",, also whatcha want to do with it..

When you say generically "Tactical", you've just dumped several hundreds,,if not thousands of knives into the mix...

Explain what you are looking for and what you want to do with it..

If you will modify your price requirements then you will find it hard to beat the Chris Reeve Green Beret knives. I say the GB knives because I like flat sided handles, but I also have some of the one piece knives (Shadow III, Tanto 1) and they are certainly one of the strongest knives on the market. He is now using S30V also.

Check out the Camillus CQB1 and Black Ops CQB3. I have a CQB1S and It's a great knife for the price. Its under 7" (5 and 3/4th) so it may not be to your taste, but I personally find that 7 inches is often a bit much and the sheath it comes with is absolutely supurb. (The cqb3 comes with a different style sheath and wont fit the kydex) You can get either for well under the dollar limit you placed.

Swamp Rat would be a solid choice, the Ready Detachment series from Ranger Knives has been getting good reviews lately and is a similar profiled knife ground out of 5160 which is a very durable steel, you might want to check that out.

The Becker CU/7 is cuts well and overall is a solid utility knife, but isn't up there in regards to strength.

Ranger Knives RD7 without a doubt. You will have money left over for a nice folder and sharpening system.
