I am looking for a good, economical, yet sturdy fixed blade, mainly for camping/utility use. I want to do light chopping and prying but still handle finer tasks. I prefer a blade of around 7". I have been looking at the BKT7 as a very good choice and the price is great but I have some questions about the whole BKT line. Why is the BKT10 "Crewman", BKT7 and BKT9 so much less expensive than the BKT2 "Companion"?

How comfortable are the handles for long use? Are they removable for cleaning?

How good is the O1706-6C carbon steel? Corrosion resistance, edge holding, etc? How good is the epoxy finish?

Thanks for your time.

Welcome to Blade Forums. I think the BK-7 fits your needs perfectly. If you are going for a little more in the chopping department, then consider the BK-9. Both are great knives, and heck.. for the price you can certainly get both! I have no idea why the BK-2 is priced higher than the others, but it does have a kydex sheath and is a bit thicker. BK&T has many fine models and make for fine users. 01706-6C is a wonderful steel, takes a wicked edge and is easy to sharpen. It will rust, but simple blade maintanence should prevent and/or take care of anything you encounter. The epoxy finish is pretty durable, I have done a fair amount of chopping with my BK-9 and have not needed to resharpen or can detect any damage to the finish.
Hope this helps.

PhoulPlae welcome to the forums.

I have both the BK2 Campanion, and the BK9. There is much discussion over the handles regarding size/feel. I ordered mine without handling a BK&T before, and the ergos just fit. Personally, I think they are great. I have not used them for extended periods of time, however. For fine tasks, I imagine the BK2, or the new BK10 crewman would be better, although the BK9 is a remarkably "quick" knife for a 9" bowie. Balance point is about an inch above the hilt on the BK9, and about 0.5" below the hilt on the BK2. If light chopping is delimbing sapplings and splitting off kindling, the BK2 would be adequate, but the BK9 would be quicker, and require less effort, IMO.

I like the steel, handles and price. I believe the campanion is more expensive due to its thickness and kydex. The TacTool and Brute are both thicker, come with kydex sheaths, and likewise more expensive then the propex/nylon equipped knives from BK&T (such as the BK7,9 and 10).

Ethan Becker indicated that the BK10 was an "evolved" BK2, much in the same way that the BK9 is an evolved BK1 (Brute). You can check out that Blade Forums thread here I like both my knives, but have yet to give the BK9 a serious workout.

Hope some of this is helpful. I will say that there is a feeling of quality when you hold these knives. Everything just feels solid.

Regards,

Shaun.

Thanks for the replies.

It looks like the BK7 or maybe the BK10 will fit the bill nicely. I don't need an overly thick blade and I like the tang extension at the butt. Are the GV6H handle slabs removable, if so with what type of fastener? How is the Propex/Nylon sheath?

Yes, the scales come off readily. See this link for screw size info.
