I own a Spyderco Delica, Dragonfly and a Byrd Crow and Finch.

I think out of all of these the VG-10 on my delica is the best, so what i want to find is a small knife about 2 inches that folds and is a lockback with vg-10 or better - at not costing the earth.

Would you suggest anything in particular ? I just feel that i could do better than AUS-8 . . whats your opinion on AUS-8, VG-10 and what would you say is a better steel for edge retantion etc in a 2 inch pocket knife..

Thanks guys

spyderco UKPK is a good one. Not a locking blade I know but might as well be due to the pressure required to close the blade plus the actual shape of the handle/blade means that the way that you hold the knife to use it I doubt you could close the blade accidentally under normal use.

How about Blade-Tech. The Mouse is an old Spyderco design. It has a 2.0" blade of S30V, G-10 handle scales, and is a lockback. Around $65.00 online, and around $85.00 online if you choose the carbon fiber scales.

If an auto is an option, consider the Protech Runt. Hard to find a better knife at that size, auto or not.

i will look into blade-tech,

I am such a spyderco fan, but i feel that my knife should deserve better steel than AUS-8 while still being 2 inches ( i dont want a big knife ) i hear good things about S30V but not many knifes that are small have it. I have a delica with VG-10 which is def better than AUS-8

Oh dear haha Blade Tech Knives - Mouse II Carbon Fibre is the same steel as you said S30V but its over £100 ! i cant afford even £50

They do a lite version whioch is "440C"

How does 440C compare with AUS-8 ? i mean i can not seem to afford anything like S30V since they cost is bumped up way way too much

Thanks WG

sorry puuk i was posting as you posted . . i cant seem to find those very well in the UK, see to make my self less of a hastle to police i want something that conforms to 2 inches rather than 3, while retaining good steel. I checked into the spin, and it is rated as VG-10

Any opinions on what steel is good and that can be found in a 2 inch lock back ?
Also i am open to other brands regarding price and construction.

440C is very good steel. Holds a fine edge a long time and is very corrosion-resistant.

AUS-8 is actually a pretty good steel in itself. If you're going to use it for heavy cutting, you'll be sharpening it more often than VG-10 or 440C, but for light daily use, it's OK.

The Spin is incredible. I've got one. The blade is thin and sharp to begin with, and it tapers to the tip, which will cut into anything. The blade is under 2" and the whole knife is so light, you can clip it to a shirt pocket. It's not a lockback, it's a framelock, very strong.

Thanks for that !

So 440C is better than AUS-8 ? how much better is it in terms of edge retention etc

It's hard to compare, really, since the blade geometry and angle of sharpening have so much to do with it, as well as the heat treat of each -- some companies do that better than others.

AUS-8 is a good inexpensive steel for working knives, but i'd rate 440C much better in edge retention. I can't give you a figure on it, though, not having two otherwise identical knives, one with each steel.

so would you rate the "Blade Tech Knives - Mouse Lite"

Blade Tech Knives - Mouse Lite
Overall Length: 12.4 cm
Blade Length: 4.8 cm
Blade Steel: 440c Stainless Steel
Handle Material: Fibre Glass Reinforced Nylon
Heinnie Price £33.95

Would you say this would be a good knife alternative to AUS-8 Dragonfly ?

WG

Both excellent small knives. Almost a matter of personal taste. Going by the steel, I'd say the Mouse. Personally, I'm carrying a Boker Subcom Folder -- in AUS-8. Like the Mouse and the Dragonfly, it fits in the watch pocket of my jeans.

i like the look of the mouse, plus it does not look as intimidating as the dragonfly . .
I like the fact you say 440C is better so its not a substitute, if i buy a mouse lite it will become an upgrade !

Spyderco Kiwi is also VG10 and cheapish if you go for the stainless handles. However, if you can reach the price I'd get a Kopa - I'm also a fan of small bladed VG10 locking knives and I've had my Kopa for over 6 months now and I love it. Or if you can wait, the micro Dyad is out soon with TWO 2" VG10 blades and all that lovely Spydie quality
