I'm looking for a folder with the following characteristics (not sure it exists).

  • Carbon (not stainless) steel
  • Not a "twist-lock" (so no Opinel)
  • But yes, a lock (so no grandpa knives)
  • Not a tanto (so no Benchmade Stryker M2)
  • Under 3.5" (so no Benchmade 710 M2)
  • Only one blade (so no iterations of the first-ever SAK)

Actually, this list gives me an idea: I need to see if there's a BM 705 in M2. That'd be pretty close to perfect, since I love the Axis lock, although the handle's a little small and M2 is higher-tech than I had in mind. I guess I'm looking for a ( :barf: ) "tactical" small folder in carbon steel. Wish it had an opening hole, but I know Spyderco doesn't make such a beast. I'd even put up with a linerlock!

Hi,
Don't count Grandpa out yet, the Scrade Old Timer 1940T Gunstock Trapper might suit your needs.

You might also want to check out AG Russell's model A340 with a damascus blade here: http://www.4knives.net/agrussell/a340-da2.html

It's not a tactical, but a Case yellow handled Copperlock fits your other parameters. Lockback, thin overall, can be seen at Lowe's. I put a clip on mine with parts from Koval. That was extremely easy to do. The drilling and tapping were a snap. There's enough blade sticking out of the handle to open it one handed even without a thumbstud, but that's a little iffy, it about bit me a couple of times. Haven't got one of the one-armed-bandits from SMKW yet, that will be one ugly knife after I do.

Oh yeah, look for the mini AFCK in M2, got one in my pocket, and still forgot about it, blade is 3.2" from handle. Has the opening hole, too.

Check out the Whitewing lockbacks. Blades are under 3", steel is CPM 3V, and the workmanship is outstanding.

Case CopperLocks come with "surgical steel" whatever it means and have mid-handle lockback. According to the Smokey Mountain KW catalog the yellow handle knife is chrome-vanadium blade!!! Other handle options: appaloosa bone, jigged bone, stag, pocket worn bone. Case also has genuine stag lockbacks with surgical steel: 3" and 3.75" single blade lockbacks (Case catalog #51225LSS and 51405LSS if I am right; SMKW catalog # CA0061 and CA0021).

However, after some check I am not sure if the Case "surgical steel" is truly high carbon non-stainless steel.

I think the Mini AFCK's in M2 were about a 2.9" or 3.1" blade, and feature an opening hole.

Someone (other than me) might be willing to part with one. Or maybe some dealer might still have one in stock.

That little Old Timer locking single blade trapper is one of my all time favorite knives. A real working knife that you can wear out and toss with out tears. If you keep your eyes open, every once in while you can pick these up for around 10 Bucks each as a promotional. Lowes had 'em for $9/95 a couple of years back as I remember. You will wear the blade out keeping it sharp, eventually, but they do get scary sharp and love a daily steeling.

Aha! Mini AFCK in M2 would work. Are those the ones with the proper round hole?

And why don't they make the 705 in M2? Or do they?

I looked at a bunch of websites and never saw the 705 in anything but 154cm. The discontinued Mini AFCK's have the proper round hole. The new Mini AFCK II has an oval hole. You might have to settle for the oval one.

There is a limited # of BM 705's coming out soon(hopefully) in M2. They are being made as a forum knife with CF scales and the BC1 coating. There were 100 slots available and right now they are all reserved with a bit of a waiting list.

There is also a BM 730 in M2. There were 500 made and the first ones shipped out to dealers a few days ago. They also have the CF scales. Not sure if they meet the blade length requirement though, might be just a bit long.

Tique beat me to the line, but it is true that BM is coming out with a very limited 705 in M2. I would suspect that a few might make it to the "For Sale" pages here and elsewhere.

Have you considered any of Dozier's folders. I personally feel that D2 out-performs M2. Not sure if D2 is considered carbon or stainless. I had a brief discussion with Mr. Dozier a few days ago and he seemed to indicate that it fell into the carbon range.

Good luck!

I saw those Doziers, but my understanding is that D2 has a mess of chromium and is, technically, stainless. Plus, D2 defeats one of the main purposes in mind (which I never actually mentioned): ease of getting a razor edge.

This mini AFCK in M2 has me intrigued, especially with the round hole. Anyone know any dealers?

Shmackey... I sent you an e-mail about the Mini AFCK-M2. If you are not interested in the combo edge, send me an e-mail anyway. I think I know a couple of people who may have the plain blade version.

You'll like the knife, solid, good feel and nice shape blade. It is a Benchmade classic (especially with the round hole). Any BM fan like yourself should have one.

If ease of getting the edge razor sharp is your main concern, I'm not sure M2 is what you want. I had one of the old Gerber bird and trout knives made out of M2 and that sucker was the hardest knife to sharpen I have ever seen! M2 is a high speed steel, and I believe, comes in at over 60 Rockwell.

I recently purchased a MINI AFCK 11 Plain in M2 from Knife Outlet. Was the best price I found. They can also be ordered direct from BM.

You will never have difficulty sharpening any Dozier knife. A razor edge is what they are all about. I've never seen anything as sharp, and they're a snap to sharpen. Even I can do it.

Danbo, good point about M2. I'm thinking of the low-tech carbon steel you find in old Sabatier kitchen knives, for example. Relatively soft (Rc 55), and oh so easy to work with.

Are O2, A2, and all the others pretty much like M2?
