I've been looking at Cold Steels' Viking Hand Axe, but all the reviews say it needs a lot of work. Are there any other bearded hand axes out there of good quality? I'd prefer if they were under $60.

You are hard pressed to find any axe whats good right off the shelf at 60$
Especially so a novelty "viking" axe. You will likely need a file & stones to make an axe good.

The fact the tool needs final finishing means the savings (factory labour is very expensive these days) are passed on to you. Were you to insist this implement were carefully sharpened and polished to your specifications the price would easily double or triple. If you want examples merely look at the price of ready-to-go Swedish axes.

I just looked at the price for a Cold Steel Viking Hand Axe on Amazon and it was $30.99 with free shipping. If, that's the style of Axe you like, hell, buy two! Cold Steel has a reputation of making decent edged tools. They use decent steel, heat-treating and sharpening. Not the best, but for the money, not bad.

If their Viking Hand Axe is anything like their Norse Hawk, it shouldn't take too long to get it in good shape. Just need to strip the paint, file the handle and eye for better fit, put an edge on it, maybe treat the handle. For that price it's really a steal.

Id go cold steel. You'll have a half hour of work in it and it'll be good to go, at least if it's like any of the CS Hawks I've owned.

I am putting the finishing touches on a Norse, my first mod project. Will post pics when done.
