I've been wearing a Timex Expedition for a while now. I like the watch but it ran out of battery and am now looking for a new one. I've decided to go in a different direction. I'm looking for a digital watch. I work out so I need a stop watch/ countdown timer. I am looking at the Nike Oregon Series Digital Regular and the Nike Triax Speed 50 Regular. Anyone have one? What do you think? other recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Nike watches are fair quality for the price, but other than the aesthetics, quality isn't much above a Timex.

I've been through dozens of watches over the years, and mainly go for reliability and sturdiness now.

I've found that G-Shock watches survive anything you can throw at them. I've had my latest one for a long time now and knock it up every day at work. Mine is at the bottom right of this page:

All the watches with digital displays have great stopwatches with lap timers too.

If you find they are too bulky and heavy, I would look at other premium Casios too.

As I said, the Nike ones are decent enough, but a little expensive for what they are in my opinion.

yeah thanks - i was looking at the gshock but as u said they seem kinda bulky for my working out (i had one a couple years back and just felt like a tank on my wrist lol)- ill hav to look at casios- thanks again

Not to say you should't buy a new watch if you want one, but you could put a new battery in the timex. I have a timex expedition, and replaced the battery in it myself last summer. Battery cost about a dollar, and it took less than 5 minutes to do.

i thought about replacing the battery but the face of the watch is scratched pretty bad- besides i want a stop watch:D

pick up a casio g shock solar/atomic. bulletproof and you never have to change the battery, well actually you would have to change it in about 10 years but by then you'll be tired of the watch anyway. dead on accurate and tough as nails.

You can polish out the scratches with toothpaste. I'm not trying to talk you out of a new watch, just saying don't throw out the old one.

I've had better luck with Casio and Armitron than with Timex. Even non-Gshock Casios hold up well.

i've got a G Shock G-7500 that I love for the gym. It seemed big at first but now I love it. I beat the crap out of it doing crossfit 5 days a week, swim once a week, and it is still like new after about a year. it has a vibrate function that is great since i'm always listening to the iPod.

I had a Timex before the G-shock and it didn't hold up very well to my workouts. one of the buttons quit working, the illumination quit, and the beeper quit.

thanks bennyg19 the whole vibrating thing is pretty cool and me like you listen to my ipod- im taking a serious look at them now

I think the only G-shock that vibrates is the G-7500 and G-7510. You can compare them all on the G-shock website. i love the vibrate function because I have the alarm set for the time I need to stop working out and get in the shower or I'll be late for work.

I had one of the Timex Expedition watches. I didn't mind the watch itself, but the band was nylon and became so rank that I stopped wearing it. Lost it soon after that...

The last few years I've been wearing an Ironman Triathlon from Timex, like this one:

Great watch! Priced right, keeps time very well, the "indiglo" is perfect, and I love the tinted screen for working in the desert sun.

If buying a new watch soon, I'd choose another similar Timex or maybe a Casio.

Regardless, I think you should buy a new battery for your old watch. Then you'll have an extra, or a separate watch for dirty jobs.

Happy Shopping!

didn't mind the watch itself, but the band

Straps are easy to replace once you get the trick of it. Fabric straps need to be washed once in a while, just like any fabric you wear next to your skin....

Nah, whatever had settled into that band wouldn't wash out. Not completely anyway - the stench would return within days of being washed. Blechhh! Lost the watch before I could buy a new band. :(

I don't really know your budget, but the best workout watch for me has been my Polar HRM watch. It keeps track of your heart rate so you can gauge your workout much better. Also keeps track of calories, time etc. etc. It takes quite a beating too.

Are there any watches that have scratch resistant matte finishes? Commercially available that is.

I have an old Timex Ironman that has had Many Battery Changes and has had the Bands replaced 5 to 7 times.
This has been my beater for many years for working on cars, painting, outdoor work, etc.

I liked that one so well that I bought another one (in Day Glow) that is well worn also, With the Batteries replaced a couple of times and the Band once.

i did like timex ironman- i got one for my father- but the screen cracked pretty early, and hes not someone who used it hard, only on week ends for running, he may hav banged it but i do the same so im a littled reserved- plus when the screen cracked water got in and tho it didnt break the watch it screwed it up a bit and i row so im near the water a lot so its liable to get wet- thats why i thought id go with somehting different

o and point44 that watch is prob over my budget but i dont need a heart rate monitor so i dont want to hav somthing extra on the watch that can break- i like to keep it simple especially with electronics- it always annoys me when an expensive piece of technology breaks, maybe thats just me tho- thanks again everyone for ur input everythings and anything is appreciated

It is quite expensive (and a very robust watch) but if you're really into your workouts, then it's worth it. However, i wouldn't have it as my only watch. I personally wear an Omega Planet Ocean daily but a Polar to the gym. However, i love my Casio G-Shock Tough Solar. It's the one that looks like the GW5600 but has Touch Solar. I'd wear that everyday 'cos it is a great watch but i bought myself the Omega as a graduation present and it has more sentimental value, so i feel good when i wear it.

The Casio GW5600 is smaller than the newer G-shocks so it might fit your wrist better. It's great if you like the retro styling. I LOVE IT.
