Hi all,

New to the forums here and was excited to see a Schrade sub-forum. My dad carried Old Timer knives exclusively in the field. I remember he somewhat cringed when I came home to proudly show him my first knife purchase, a 2 bladed Uncle Henry pen knife very similar to the only non-Schrade knife he owned ... a Case pen knife that went everywhere with him (I even slipped it into his pocket before we buried him).

On my 18th birthday he presented me with a brand new 13OT, telling me I needed a real knife (I'd been using a second hand Western fixed blade with taped up leather handle in the field since I was 12 with no complaints from the numerous deer, coon, squirrels, rattlers, etc that I'd used it on).

In my youth working with the Ga Forestry Service and serving the Boy Scout troop I grew up in, that knife was my (almost) daily companion and served me well. Unfortunately, that knife was lost in the swamp in Fla. after over 10 years of faithful service and after many many years, I'd love to have another one.

I'm not looking for (nor can I afford) one in mint condition, don't care if the handle has a crack or chip or if the blade has a small nick or 3. I want a knife that will go on my belt and travel with me every day, a real working knife. I keep an eye on eBay and such but no luck yet.

Should any of you know of a beater out there that needs some TCL and a good home, please PM me.

Also, how is that Schrade + steel for holding an edge? I see a few 144UH models on eBay and while it's not an Uncle Henry ... well, you know.

Thanks,
Jim (Jester)

Welcome Jim!

The 13OT Trailblazer is not a pattern you see all that often as it was only offered from 1978 to 1980 but it is a great knife. Good luck, if you watch eBay for a couple months you might find one.

Schrade+ likely meant 440A back when the 13OT and 144UH were being sold. It holds an edge pretty well imo. Remember the 13OT was carbon unlike the 144UH which was stainless.

If you are patient, one will come up. However, you might research the possibility of a 165 OT or a 160 OT. They are also superb for pretty much the same purposes. A little longer, but really fine knives and much more common.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I've kinda got my heart set on a 13OT, would perhaps settle for a 14OT or 144UT ... perhaps. I'd got an old 165 with a broken tip that I use from time to time.

Dave, I know the 13OT is carbon, I prefer a carbon blade when possible. I don't do alot of river/swamp work anymore and I find the care and feeding of a quality vintage knife like a 13OT to be soothing to an old man with fond memories.

And the search continues ....

Jester,
Good luck. These fixed blades are becoming harder and harder to find and are bringing a good price.
Please let us know if you come across a stock pile of em.
