My brother in law just got his first couple stones for Christmas and was asking me about sharpening techniques. I gave him a good rundown but I remembered learning a lot from a YouTuber I found on here years ago. I don't remember much from the videos but I know he taught how you could place a board between your two sinks and put the stone on that, and he would go back and forth while sharpening instead of just in one direction. If I recall correctly they had a pretty professional camera setup but it's been years. I think they may have even been a user on this site at the time.

If no one knows what I'm talking about, do you have any trusted channels I could recommend to him? I haven't been too into the online knife scene for awhile so I'm out of the loop.

Thanks!

Below are two YouTube channels I've bookmarked for my own reference on freehand technique. The first link is to the channel of BF member 'Jason B.' ('MrEdgy' on YouTube). Don't know if he's still around on BF, I haven't seen him post here in awhile. And the 2nd link is to Murray Carter's channel on YouTube. Both are great references to learn technique. Both are waterstone specialists, but their techniques fundamentally apply to any stones used.

There are a number of good ones, but two of the channels/content producers who stick in my mind are Burrfection and OUTDOORS55.

HERE IS THE NEARLY 3 HOURS of tutorial by CARTER CUTLERY. This can be broken down into manageable watchable teaching segments.
Very valuable for learning how to on stones.
