Looking for advice for traditional style fixed blade for son

I'm shopping around for a traditional styled (stacked leather handle) smaller fixed blade knife for my 13 year old son. Trying to keep the budget in the ~$50 range. I've considered a Case Little Fin knife, but I am hesitant because I don't know if it looks like a filet knife in person (he's 13--if he could choose, he'd grab the biggest Bowie knife made. I'm trying to break him of that before he wastes $$$$$$ going through all the flashy but unrealistic knives like I did!)

How are the new Kabar hunting knives? I assume US made Case knives would be better for about the same money.

I would like something that is relatively easy to sharpen (so he can learn to do that as well.)

What other brands am I missing?

Thanks for any advice!

Ka-Bar makes a Little Finn as well. I have one that I use for all of my hunting - no matter if it's fish or deer or what.

Excellent little knife.

If you want a smaller fixed blade for yourself that you can later hand down to your son, take a look at the Bark River Little Creek. They're more than your budget (2-3x) but they are excellent knives. I got one with a desert ironwood burl handle for my father for Christmas a couple years back. Perfect size for gutting a deer.

Inheritthefire--I think the new Kabars are some kind of super stainless that's probably a bear to sharpen, and I believe they are made in Taiwan. For only $10-20 more I think the Case version would be better. I have not ruled out a vintage Kabar version though. Regarding buying myself one to pass down, I am all set with a Blackjack 125 (BRKT made) and once he sees it he will probably want something similar.

Fatcorgi--I think a bird and trout knife would be a little small.

I should clarify--I'm looking more for a woodcraft type of knife rather than a specific hunting knife.

Eric H.- pm me with a mailing address and I will fix you up. Satisfaction guaranteed, no charge.

I believe Queen makes one that may fit your bill. If you can go used, an older Western made in Colorado is a good choice. Western made my BSA knife from the late 1960s and it is still active.

Looks like you are hooked up, but I was going to say that the Case M3 Finn would really be about perfect.

Outstanding :)

When I was after a FB as a young kid, my mother took a paring knife out of the kitchen drawer, gave it my dad to sharpen at work, and made me a sheath. I carried that knife throughout my childhood and halfway through my teenage years (before it was stolen). One of the best FBs I ever owned :)

Good info, I didn't realize this. I bought mine close to a decade ago. It sharpens quite easily, and stays sharp.
