Looking for advice on my first Spyderco

I want to get a Spyderco. I really like how they stand behind their knives and care about what their customers think.

Right now, I have a Benchmade 943 that I really like. I am looking to get some thing comparable in quality, finish, etc from Spyderco. One knife that caught my eye is the Mini Manix (83 mm or whatever it is really called). I would like to know what you think about this knife. I am also looking for suggestions about other knives that would be on the same level as my BM. (I know that all Spyderco knives are really good etc etc etc, but I am looking for something more towards the higher end folder than the lower end).

Any advice/comments are appreciated.

Thanks,
P

I think the Benchmade 943 looks an awful lot like the Spyderco Military. One thing that you didn't mention is what you expect of the knife. Right now, the one of most desired Spyderco is the Plain Edge ZDP Delica.

I love Spyderco knives. I swear by my Native. If you get a chance to handle a Native, give it a shot and see how you like it. It's been my EDC for years and I wouldn't ever want to part with it.

spyderco native is a good choice. i passed one up for a Salt 1 and, though i love my Salt 1, i wish i had a native too... get the native.

The mini Manix is a good one to start with, but I like the original full size Manix a little better. Truth is there’s not a whole lot of difference between the two except that the mini is shorter. Both are extra heavy duty and cut very well.

The Chinook II is built just as tough as the Manix and is coming out soon with a new flat ground blade.

The Military is another one to consider, not as overbuilt as the Manix’s and Chinook but not as heavy either. The Military is a very high performance cutter.

Plain edged delica 4 in vg-10 steel. The starting point for spyder addiction.

I second what Michael said.

The Delica is awesome. I'm still not sure if I like the 4 better than the 3 but it really doesn't matter. The Delica is a knife every Spyder lover should own. :)

I have both and I must admit I like the Delica 3 over the D4:o

I agree, Delica4 and Native are very good knives, I carry both of them, but my love belong to ADVENTURA. It is beautiful knive, little bigger than Delica4 and little lighter, has nice recurved blade, handle bigger, more comfortable than Delica and for people with large hands it has choil.

The Mini-manix is a most excellent knife! The Military, is any form is also an excellent knife. You could wait for the BG-42 and CF Military. I also have a lot of LOVE for the Adventura!! It is a wonderful knife. It feels GREAT in the hand, and it wicked sharp. There are many wonderful Spydies TO choose from.

Has anyone considered the Native? With s30V steel and at only 40.00 at some Wal-marts (not all) it's a deal.

Native III, D'Allara DP, Mini Manix, Delica 4 (ZDP :D) and even the Para :) are great folders. Get them both - there's no order. ;)

Planza, the better you get to know Spyderco products the less you want to go back. They offer the best designs and materials for reasonable prices.

A few days ago I recommended the Delica 4 in PE to a knife starting friend of mine who is now really happy with it. I´ve sent him dozens of pictures from all kinds of folders, not only Spydercos, and described him what I prefer and why. After a while he suddently badly wanted a Delica 4. I teased him a bit by going on showing him e.g. Benchmades. His reaction was "these knives have no index choil or unsharpened area that let me stop the blade with my index finger ... I want a Spyderco, a Delica 4!"

Knowing you come from a BM 943 I would recommend first:
- Delica 4, wave, zdp, best bang for the buck

- Adventura, awesome design, eyecatcher, very usefull and secure while slim and light, very admired.

- Paramilitary, the ONE for me (besides the Lil´ Temperance, which I don´t dare to use, because I only have one yet), from user standpoint best design for me yet

- Ocelot, very ergonomic, eyecatcher, sheeple friendly

- Native III, really good bang for the buck, very usefull, ergonomic and secure shape, light because no steel liners

- Lil Temperance LP or TP, maybe the best of all times, very sought after, harder to get than all others

Recommendation for heavier and bigger folders:
- Manix 83 mm, tough and very usefull, a bit on the heavy side, but worth each gramm

- Military, workhorse, very light but strong, best kitchen/ camping folder, very ergonomic, not really sheeple friendly :-D

- D´allara DP, great lock, ergonomic, very useful workhorse, a bit heavy but worth it

- A.T.R. ss, workhorse, a bit heavy but slim, good to carry in jeans, eyecatcher, fast gripchanges

The last knife I got is a blue Dodo PE, absolutely gorgeous, I simply love this knife!

I you choose one of the above or another Spyderco knife you can´t go wrong.

Best wishes,
JB
