First, I will apologize in advance for bringing up a specific gun question in a knife forum and perhaps placing it even in the wrong section. Somehow I think a lot of you may have some good/bad feedback which is what I am after, but again please forgive me if this is out of place. Please move if necessary. I do not have any pic's either, but I am simply asking some folks around here for some advice. Anyone ever upgrade or pimp out their SKS? I know most of you will say ahh why- why not go with the obvious AK47/AR15. Well, this was the 2nd rifle I ever purchased after I turned 18 and was able to purchase a rifle (first was a Ruger 10/22 which I also still own and LOVE). A kid, life, work, and 18+ years later I feel the need to upgrade her now for whatever arbitrary reason versus buying something brand new. Perhaps its boredom, looking for a few hour weekend project; or the 55-60 hours of work/stress per week is not enough to occupy my mind. I have always seen the "cheap" kits available and just wanted to know which ones were good or bad. I was somewhat looking to upgrade the rifle basics- and somehow if possible keep the spiked bayonet and add rails/ some sort of scope/sighting. If I cannot, no issue though. Scope/sights upgrade is the only mandatory issue. Not sure I will be in a trench for the bayonet, but I was just looking to upgrade the gun with little or no gunsmithing xp. Its not a Yugo ver firstly, but a Chi or Russian SKS version-which I preferred. It always fired like a champ and was probably the best 110.00 bucks I ever spent on a gun-value wise. 762x39 is not cheap ammo though, so this is basically just going to be a few hour wknd project and I won't be firing thousands of rounds at the range or from a tower. Bad Azz home protection basically. I would have ordered the SN bullpop, although I wasnt going for the total SWAT look... it just looks like real quality fit and finish wise, but there is a 4 month waiting list when I checked and I didn't want to loose the itch by then. I then was looking at the Tapco I think was the company- few others which loooked nice and were affordable-and this is where I started becoming really confused. The reviews were all over the place so I wanted to ask here. Any advice for a gun novice looking to upgrade a SKS? Any kits you have had luck with? Any to stay away from? I was already not liking the Dragonov ones etc I saw online. Anyway, would appreciate any feedback- even if you think I should keep her stock for whatever reason. Thank you for your time.

I have owned several SKS rifles. They are so much fun. I have also given in to the urge to "upgrade" them in the past.

I would suggest you try not to do any changes that can not be reversed. Don't cut or permanently modify anything. Save all the old parts, every screw and especially the original magazine.

My first SKS was a real nice Chinese I got for $99.00

I "upgraded " the crap out of it and then sold all the original parts to buy more upgrades for it. That was about 20 years ago and I really regret it.

There are a lot of aftermarket larger capacity magazines out there. Most are crap. I have had good luck with the 20 round polymer magazines made by Tapco, I would pick up a couple of those.

There are so many websites dedicated to the SKS. I would look around some sites that sell parts and maybe some SKS discussion forums.

I have a project SKS I am playing with now. I traded a makarov pistol for it. Its my first Yugo. It came with a black fiberglass stock and a front hand guard with a rail on it all ready installed. I feel a little better about it because I am not the one that "upgaded" it

Here it is.
