Looking for an allround oil and a rust question.

So I just inspected my fixed blade (Condor Hudson bay with 1075) which I haven't used in a year and was oiled with vaseline oil and noticed a little bit of rust. Minor specks really.

After some forum searching I removed most of it with WD40 and a soft cloth.

First of all, should I be worried about these spots?

I normally would just use a yellow green sponge to get rid of it but it's near the wooden handle and I don't want to ruin the handle.
And if it doesn't hurt the knife I might as well leave it.

Anyway I want to use a better oil then vaseline, there is bound to be better stuff out there.

I would like an oil which I can also use as a lubricant on my stainless folders to smooth the action.
And which stays on forever, meaning not having to reply every 6 months when not using the knife. (not evaporate)
It should be safe for wood, if it also helps protect the wood it would be even better.
Safe for cutting food with it would be a plus.

It would be perfect if a normal house hold/general item would do the job because I haven't heard of any of the brands being used on this forum.

I don't think those specs are anything to worry about, just a little pitting for the rust. As far as lube, I'm a fan of frog lube, food safe (it tastes/smells like winter green lol) smooths folders out, I can't speak to the longevity though...

I just checked out the Froglube website, funny stuff :D Green specops proven gun oil.
It's a bit to expensive (on Ebay) for my taste.

Have a look at Inox. It sprays on like WD40, penetrates well, doesnt seem to get sticky or tacky, doesnt wipe off easily, doesnt damage much and is non toxic. You can also buy a food grade version.

The MX3 seems the one I would want.
Unfortunately it is unavailable to me. (no stores in my country or UK and none on Ebay who ship to me)

This is why I asked for a common/general article because most US brands are unavailable to me. :(

Mineral Oil is the way to go.

Big Mike
This came up a lot during a search.
Problem for me is; Mineral oil seems to be a very broad term.
(Wiki: A mineral oil is any of various colorless, odorless, light mixtures of alkanes in the C15 to C40 range from a non-vegetable (mineral) source, particularly a distillate of petroleum)
I don't think olive oil would suffice?

I also found "food grade mineral oil"
I have no idea what that is.

Olive oil is from a vegetable source, and will go rancid on you.

Mineral oil is the stuff in baby oil (except they add fragrance and chemicals.) Food Safe is commonly denoted USP. It can be found really expensively here in the states in gourmet food stores - for treating wooden utinsils, or really cheaply in drug stores - as a laxative. As far as I can tell, it's the same stuff. :) Don't know about in the UK, but that's where I'd try first.

Thanks for trying to explain but it's still not clear to me. (language barrier I guess)
All I got is that I have to buy laxative and put that on my knife. :p

Ballistol!! Love the stuff. It's made in germany

Do you mean this? (and I don't mean the brand but this specific product)

Can you tell me more about it?
Good lubricant, anti rust, save for wooden handles and to cut food with?

Edit.
A search shows a lot of people are crazy about it.
But it seems to affect bronze/copper/brass.

I use FP-10 and Ballistol. Here's the site for Ballistol.

Here's the "story" of it. Lots of us gun guys use it for, well, everything.

I just did a search on Ballistol and it seems it removes brass/copper residue and that's why it's used for guns.
(something with barrel cleaning, ammo leaving brass/copper behind, don't know specifics)
It also seems to affect bronze, copper, brass washers, bushings and the finish of those materials.

I'm getting the feeling I was right sticking with good old vaseline (oil). Who knows what these modern oil affect.. I'm also worried about my leather sheath.

The last time I only put vaseline oil on my Condor, I just also put normal vaseline on all the non coated parts. I hope that is sufficient in preventing rust this time.

Ballistol basically creeps in every crevice and gets under those things like copper and lead and make them float away. Just try it you'll love it! It's not harmful or toxic. It has mineral oil in it. Get the sportsmans stuff. I use it on all my knives and guns. Never had a problem. I have benchmades, crk, spyderco. Works great

Choji Oil. Japanese sword oil. Mineral oil with a touch of clove. Mineral oil is slow to evaporate. Good Choji is a bit more refined. Can you protect the wood with electrical tape while working on the steel?

Pretty much...

Seems some in the UK call it "white oil".

Best of luck.

You mean when trying to get rid of the rust spots? I could try that.

Do you know of the brand Bonsaimark's for Choji oil?

I use mineral oil as well, nothing special (the clear stuff you drink that makes you go poop) don't put too much thought into what exactly it is..

Also you shouldn't be worried about your sheath because if you're oiling blades for long term storage, they should not be in a leather sheath.

Try rubbing that handle rust across the inside of a leather belt.

I had rust stains on the edge of my KA-BAR (1095) that came off when stropping.
