... criteria as follow:

- slipjoint
- single blade (clip or drop point)
- max. blade length: 3 inches
- prefer dark scales
- open pillar handle (not a dealbreaker)
- long warranty (lifetime would be great)
- max. price: $100
- profile similar to Perceval Le Francais or Emerson Mini A-100

I carry a Victorinox Rambler on my keychain and wanted a larger companion for my pocket. As alternatives, I thought about a Victorinox Solo Alox (I gave one to my brother-in-law and want something different), and a Case Sodbuster Jr (just wish the CV blade came with the black handle).

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, and thanks in advance if you reply. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable long weekend.

Keep an eye on the exchange. a nice A-100 sold the other day for, IIRC, $80.

I'd look at offerings by Great Eastern Knives. No open pillar construction though.

Get a Case XX Back Pocket.
4 5/8" closed - around a 3" blade - No pillar construction - Lifetime Warranty - Lanyard Hole - Or no lanyard hole.

You can get them in:
G-10 - lanyard hole
Golden Rod Bone - Lanyard hole
Deep Canyon Chestnut Bone - No Lanyard Hole - Double Silver Bolsters
Sawcut Clover Bone - No lanyard hole - double Silver bolsters
Tony Bose Dark Molasses Bone - Lanyard hole
Tony Bose Dark Red Bone - Lanyard hole
Tony Bose Ebony Wood - Lanyard hole
Yellow Handle CV Blade - No Lanyard Hole - Double Silver Bolsters.
Tony Bose Chestnut Bone - Lanyard Hole.

A slip joint with open pillar construction is impossible since the backspace itself is what puts the tension in a slip joint. Any reason you're only looking at slip joints?

If you're stuck on slip joints I would say that the spyderco ukpk and urban are some of the best modern slip joints.

Hi mkjellgren - thanks for the "schooling." I'm new to knives and still have a lot more learning to do (as you can tell). For some reason, I don't know why, I just like slipjoints. I guess maybe in part because I am aware that locking blades are illegal in different parts of the world. I figure that with a small (<3") slipjoint, I'm "good" to carry it most places. Does that make sense?

Chambriard Compact. A.G. Russell Curved Jack. Queen Cutlery Copperhead. Great Eastern #12 Toothpick. Queen Joe Pardue Cotton Sampler. Queen 1 blade Heritage Jack. Queen Gunstock. Queen Country Cousin. Case Swayback Gent. Lone Wolf Loveless City Knife. Case Sod Buster Junior. There are probably some single-blade Barlows out there somewhere. GEC also has a single blade easy open Jack, but I'm not sure if the blade length is under 3". Is that enough to get you started?

Oh! Another vote for the Spyderco UKPK - one of my all time favorites or the Spyderco Urban.
But if you're going to go the price of the Urban you can pick up the UKPK in s30v for around the same price with a little bit better blade steel.

I'd say that definitely enough to get me started! Many thanks to you and to everyone else (SeanC, crom, marcinek, BladeChick777, mkjellgren, catcalls and Baine) who took the time to reply.

Perhaps a Spyderco Terzuola SLIPIT...

I think that's true in many cases but I like to call this one a slip joint. It's an Italian made Viper Bergamasco. There is no locking mechanism. Only a detent in the pivot that "locks" the blade open. Just push on the spine of the blade to close it like you would a regular slip joint. Maybe this is more like a friction folder but it operates just like a slip joint.
