I'm currently looking at the BM Skirmish 630, BM 710 D2, Emerson Commander, & Emerson CQC-12. It will be used for everyday tasks (opening boxes, cutting rope, etc.) I also want it to be very reliable for SD and camping use. Any thoughts?

I really like the 710. It's like the Buck 110 of tacticals. Very good for everything, one of the best all around folders made, if not the best.

Any worries about corrosion on the D2 steel? Is it better off with the coating? And how about serrations?

Serrations might be helpful if cutting rope or garden hose or whatever, but I prefer a plain edge for just about everything.

A combination edge - for me - doesn't have enough of either.

The D2 may hold an edge a little longer but is a little more difficult to sharpen. Its not particularly prone to rust.

Another vote here for the 710.

cheers

The 710 w/serrations is available only with the coating. The PE is available only with no coating.

The coating does help prevent corrosion. Of course, the edge is stil uncoated, so regardless the blade still needs to be wiped dry when you're don using it.

Unless you live or work near a marine environment, you should be fine with the uncoated 710 as long as you take care of the blade before you put it away.

Whether to go with part(ly) serrated blades and coatings is a personal choice. Some people go one way, some folks go the other way.

Just remember that the black coating will wear/scratch when you use the knife and Benchmade does not recoat blades. Some folks say this worn look gives the knife "character" and compare this to the look a favorite pair of blue jeans will get as it's used over time. Others just prefer to stay with bare metal.

Out of those I would take the 710. It is a nice size but not to heavy to carry. I would take the 630 second. GOOD LUCK! Kevin:D

I like the BM Griptilian for EDC and woods stuff. If you want a bargain EDC for cuttin' boxes and such, the Boker Trance is great.

I love my Benchmade 910 and my Axis Folder, I can't imagine why you wouldn't do well with the 710.

Go for it!

Edited to add:

I missed that you were considering the Emerson Commander....I just got mine in the mail and it will definately be replacing my 910 as my EDC. The Commander feels like a sheath knife in the hand, but is very light in the pocket. The "wave" feature is the coolest thing I've seen on a knife in a long time.

Between the benchmades and the emerson, go with the Commander. Better yet, hold each one and see which feels best in your hand. Looking at pictures online I was afraid that the Emerson wouldn't fit my hand well, and the blade looks goofy in pictures. Once I opened it up it was love at first sight. I'm interested to see if it will ride in my pocket for the next few years like my Benchmade Stryker did....

I would suggest looking at the BM Rukus 610. Axis lock, S30V blade steel, a flat ground, drop point blade that is useful in a LOT of situations. Good choices on all the others, I'm just a big fan of the Rukus!!

Buc, check this thread out of Kershaw's Junkyard Dog II it's a great knife, easy on the pocket book
too, which is always handy, edge is very sharp, flat ground and keen and
stays that way, worth a look see, the flipper works very fast too.

I own an Emerson Mini-Commander.... Let's just say I don't carry it for picking splinters out of my fingers.

A Gerber Gator, low price, easy sharpen, great grip. Not a "Super" knife, or a Semi custom. just a decent all around knife.

Of the choices you have given, the 710 and the Skirmish are tops IMHO. They are both great knives. SOLID!! I think that the blade shape of the 710 is a bit more versitile. ie a better point on those occasions where a point is needed. As mentioned the Rukus, or Mini-Rukus would be worth checking out also. The Rukus is a lot larger in the handle though. Think of it as a 710 on steroids. I love it, but it is too large for many.

I recently got a Spyderco C41PBK Native in S30V - made in USA - from Wally World (#60 on their knife display in 'Sporting Goods'.) for $39.48 + s/t. It's a thumb-hole opener lockback plain blade. You could buy several for what some of the ones listed run. Mine's a keeper. My Gryptillian is nicer, of course.

The S30V Native isn't available at all Wal*Marts.... just the ones that do a lot of knife sales.

The Wave feature is why I rely on the Mini-Commander. It takes into consideration that your fine-motor skills will be gone when confronted with a sudden self-defense situation. All you'll have are gross-motor skills to rely on.... That's where waved folders shine.

Well, I own all of your choices above, and I have the CQC-12 and BM 710 here in Iraq with me.

The Commander is a great folder, but more SD oriented. It will do a lot of cutting tasks well, but the semi-chisel grind is liked by a few. I'll add that I like the robust construction of the CQC-12, but it suffers the same grind (if you're opposed to it...it works fine for me), but the non-recurve blade profile is more conducive to typical cutting tasks and has a decent belly. The Skirmish would foot the same bill as the Commander, just larger and more stoutly built, but with a more convential edge on a recurved blade. It is a flat profile and will carry well in the pocket despite the size. Also consider that it's a BIG folder, and if you're whipping it out in a sheeple environment to open a few boxes or clean you nails, it may get some unwanted attention.

The BM 710 is another great folder and the D2 is pretty decent from BM (I have an AFCK with the D2). For your needs this is probably the best option and best price of the above selection. The recurve is a little less pronounced than the Skirmish or Commander. I see you like the recurve design as all but the CQC-12 incorporate it. Hope all this helps and let us know what you decide on.
