Looking for an Opinel in San Diego

In a couple of weeks, I'll be visiting family in San Diego, and want to find an Opinel while I'm down there. People say how common they are, but I never see them, anywhere

The reason I want one is:

This was the favorite pocket knife of my hippy uncle. He loved his. And I liked it too, so after a little web research, I found out it was a classic, old-fashioned pocket knife that holds a good edge.

Wow. I'm so thrilled at the thought of another knife. :D

I guess the main reason I need a brick/mortar store is that I want one just like his, but can't quite remember blade length. If I can see one in my hand, I'll be sure to get the right one.

Thank You,

and

Cheers

The AG Russell one is a little upscale for an opinel (it's got a wood upgrade plus sheath) and it's stainless not the classic carbon steel. Williams Sonoma sells the classic Opinel with carbon steel blade (3" I believe) for about $10. There should be a Williams Sonoma in San Diego. Call to make sure they have one in stock, the store by me sells out occasionally.

The last time I was in San Diego I looked for knife stores but didn't find any. I try to buy a knife in every city I visit but don't have one for there!

I'd suggest www.eknifeworks.com Last time I shopped for them, they had the lowest prices.

The size most common is the No. 8. I also think it is the most comfortable size they make and their carbon steel is just awsome!

Good luck,

I just moved to San Diego, so I don't know all the shops around here, but the best knife store I've been to so far is:

Wright Knife & Sporting Goods
8759 La Mesa Blvd
La Mesa CA 91941
(619) 465-6905

Last time I was there I was at this shop I didn't see any Opinels, but it's a great store to visit if you're in the area. Also, the Buck factory is down here too, they have tours, might be something for you to do. I haven't been there yet, but I'm working on that. brownshoe is right about Willaim Sonoma, I used to always see Opinels in there back in Virginia, seemed like a limited selection though.

I've lived in San Diego County all my life...we have 2 exceptional knife "stores"

Strider Knives, Inc.
120 N. Pacific St. Unit L-7
San Marcos, Ca. 92069 USA

-and-

Buck Knives
1900 Weld Blvd.
El Cajon, CA 92020

Bump.

Thanks for the info, my fellow knife friends. For whatever reason, I "lost" the Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades page. Could not find it to save my life. I used to always stumble across it, but somehow misplaced it on this new computer. (shrugs)

OK, what I remember is that the blade was around 3 or 4 inches long, had a rotating (chromed?)lock ring, and a plain blond wooden handle (along with probably the plain carbon steel blade).

Temporarily consoled myself with a discounted Schrade stockman in WalMart's (fake, photographic) knife counter. It has a "Schrade+" at the base of the blade, which means it's stainless. That sucker sure is hard to reprofile on a Spyderco Sharpmaker. Seems harder to sharpen than a Sebenza with BG42. :footinmou A real test of patience combined with arm-workout!

Still looking for an Opinel, tho.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.

Cheers
