]Hello. This is my first knife making project. I used carbon steel for the blade which i heat treated and tempered, and i used oak for the handle. i plan on giving it a DLC coating and using a dark stain on the handle with a healthy amount of clear coat and SS pins to keep the handle in place. i would appreciate comments and advice on what i did right and what i could do differently in the future. thanks for looking.

sorry about all this. im having trouble uploading my pics. any advise on that? i have a photo bucket account that im using.

right click the photo bucket picture you want to use, click "copy image url" then paste that into the "insert image" icon in your text box

It is difficult to judge without understanding what is the size.
On general principle: the shape looks good. I would consider making scales thinner, rounding edges and finishing with sandpaper up to 2000 grid. But all that after they are mounted on the tong of course: so you probably planned to do it anyway...

Alright to post pics.....

Another way to do it: (I think it's easier, but it ends up working the same in the end)

Open photobucket in another tab or browser window. Go to the image you want to link to and on the right hand side of the page you will see several "Image Links" options. Simply click on the IMG code option, it will copy the link for you. Then come to the post you are writing and simply paste the text where you want the photo to appear. When you are writing the post you will see something like this:

When you submit the post, however, you will see this:

awesome. thanks for the help. i did however forget to add the dimensions of the knife. its 10" end to end and i used 3/16" X 2" stock for the blade. i know its probably a little heavier than it needs to be but its what i was going for. i do plan on using a finer grit paper to touch up the handle and i will blast the blade with aluminum oxide to take out blemishes and then use a ceramic blast to give a nice smooth finish before i put down the DLC coating.

How do you apply DLC coating yourself? I had the impression that it was an involved factory-only kind of process. Or do you have more skills than the average DIYer ;)

cool knife man.... only advice id give is you may want to work a little more on the fit & finish on the knife....... Unless you are like me & are goin to beat the hell out of it and use it as a work tool.

Maybe a lanyard hole??? its kinda big and if its meant for chopping and hacking it might help to add a lanyard hole just to you can put a leather strap on it to better strap it to your hand, but that's more of a personal thing
Regardless that is a nice blade, be sure to update some pics of it in use, we all love to see that kind of stuff

I sand blasted the blade and have the stainless steel pins mocked up, just waiting for a chance to coat it.

That is a cool looking knife !!! It has everything i look for. Full tang, bowie tip, a means to keep your finger from sliding onto the blade & a handle that has a little retention for chopping. :D

Ive been working on a couple more projects. the knife with the e cut outs is carbon steel and will have a paracord handle. its heavier that i needs to be but im just practicing witht the bar of steel that i have. im attempting to make a skinning knife from stainless for a friend, thats the one with the 3/4" finger hole and the curved blade. the last picture is how my first project currently looks. the blade is coated in DLC and the handle has a coat of stain on it. looking back i should have adheared the handle before stain because there were some touchups i had to do to feather in the stainless steel pins. but on the whold it was a good learning experience.
