I want to get my husband a Bark River knife for his birthday later this month. I have the knife picked out and have it narrowed down to two handle material choices. They are both natural wood, but one comes with a bolster, one without. Since these knives are full tang will the bolster really add that much strength/protection to the knife? I guess if you had a choice between the two options which would you rather have on your Fox River Magnum? Thanks for the advice.

Great forums by the way, have learned a lot in just a few days :)

Adds absolutely nothing in terms of strength or protection; it's just a matter of taste.

(lucky husband) :)

My personal preference is for no bolsters on FBs. The only thing I see them adding is weight. I've had a couple of FBs with bolsters in the past. They've all gone away and everything I have now is just handle material and blade.

But I'm pretty simple-minded and my tastes are very utilitarian.

Thanks for all your answers. If they had added strength etc I probably would have gone with dark curly maple with the bolster. But personally I liked the bolster free Tiger Tail Maple a little better so that is what I went with after all your answers. And I agree with you Dale, it added almost 3 ounces to the knife which was another concern, since we will be backpacking during his birthday, so I have to carry it for the first few days hidden in my pack until I can hand it over to him. And when its on your back it all adds up.
