The difference I'm looking for is... price. I'd rather not spend $500+ on a knife right now. I like the way it pops back into the handle automatically just like it springs out automatically, instead of manually having to be pulled back with some knob or the like. I don't know what that feature is called, but I wasn't sure it existed until I saw a video of the Sandshark in a post around here.

Anyone know of a quality (but not nessisarily top-notch) OTF auto with this feature that is reasonably priced?

Could you give me some brands or links? I can't seem to find any under $400. I can find some around 2 and 3 hundred, but not dual action ones; these require a plunger on the bottom to be pulled down in order to retract the blade.

Edit: I've started to come across knives like this. They fit my price range, but they look like they'd snap in half if I tried to clean my nails with 'em. The steel isn't spectacular, either. Also... a safety would be nice, my pockets are already stabbed full of holes.

Your gonna be hard pressed finding what you want. Now, I know these aren't what your looking for but, they're good OTF autos with a decent price tag to match. Plus, there are videos for each of these at videoknife.

You also might want to try a protech godfather. They're not OTF, but still damn fine autos with good prices, especially this model --> http://www.1sks.com/store/protech-godfather-basic.html

The compact swat is the closest to what I'm looking for that I found. Guess I'll either have to compromise or change my mind...

I was about to buy the Godfather a couple weeks ago, but I decided on the Dalton Companion instead.

There's a reason why 'Italian' OTF's are so cheap.... On most the blade is held in place by a metal stud in the blade tang.

Everytime the blade opens, the stud bangs against the inside of the aluminium frame, wearing both of them down.

On some, the blade is pulled back by pulling on the stud as well. So it gets a nasty bang when being closed too.

After about 20 openings (yes that few) the stud will start to get stuck in the indentation it creates simply because both blade stud (which isn't too tough) and frame are subjected to such force relative to their strength.

Buy one by all means but don't ever consider it anything other than a novelty.

Okay... to hell with the cheapies, I'll buy the Sandshark. Can anyone tell me if that monster has a safety? It doesn't look like it... and I'd really rather not to be circumsized when that thing decides to go off in my pocket. Also, anyone know much about the tool steel it's made from?

Because of the way D/A autos open, the blade isn't actually cocked until you slide the button foward. It takes a moderate amount of foward pressure to cock the blade. So the chance of it opening is VERY slim indeed.

Speaking of how D/A autos open... how do D/A autos open? What I don't understand is how they can be automatic in both directions. Are there two springs? Why don't they cancel each other out?

I'd be terrified of taking this thing apart. I have no idea how it works, it sounds complicated, and it put a half grand dent in my wallet.

Well, its a bit tricky to explain but I'll give it a shot:

When you slide the button foward, a spring, running (most of) the length of the blade is stretched.

On the end of the spring is a small tab that pushes against the blade.

What actually creates the foward push is that for a split second, the tab that pushes the blade forward is held in place against a raised rocker type lever (on a spring) in the handle.

Once the rocker lever drops the blade shoots foward. The closing process is the same but of course in reverse.

Hope that made sense :-)

It's probably best left alone,

If I dropped $500 on an auto i'd be affraid to take it apart, on the other hand id WANT to take it apart to see what it's inside that makes a $500 OTF...

And by 'If' I mean 'If i could legally import one into this country :p)

For a cheap Italian OTF, do a search for SKM or Tinys cool stuff you can get them alot cheaper (and Tinys is in the U.S. so no customs worries) and if Tinys doesn't have them in stock, request them and they'll be in next shipment (which is one roughly every two weeks).

d/a out the fronts.
I realy dislike the looks of the sand shark but there are outhers out there , the microtech ut-6 can be had for around $250.00 and the scarab can be found for around $350.00.
If it's the double edge you want check out the soon to be released mod harkins triton , should be around $300.00 to $350.00.

Actually the double edge doesn't appeal to me, I just want a dual action OTF that doesn't suck.

Edit: Sure you don't mean more like $450 on that Scarab? Other than buying used or at an auction, that is.

If you keep a eye open in the for sale forums you can probaly find a lnib scarb for $350.00 , if you buy new I think you could find one for$400.00.
The end of the scarab has a glass breaker on the end.
I prefer the ut-6 myself , its more compact and has a clean look .

I got a LNIB Scarab for $350, and I believe it is the best knife purchase I've made to date. It is one cool MF! I've been carrying it daily since it came home. To borrow the description of others, it is a MicroTech UT6 on steroids. Go ahead and spend the extra $50 to get a new one. You won't be disappointed. You really need to check out the info on the Auto forum: Here!

Lot's of good auto info.
