Looking for best Karambit. Can anyone offer a review of the Emerson Karambit?

I think the emerson comabt karambit is the best around-
if you don't have a vest to strap it to.. stick to the folder.. but if you get to run around all day with your gear on the outside go with the fixed version- (faster to the job)

The guys at "Thrust" magazine(knives not porn) have some really nice fixxed karambits. If you just like the blade I have a byrd crossbill which is a great deal at 30$ even more when you compare it to 1500.00$

any input on the differences b/w Emerson Kbits? It appears they have released several different models and I'm uncertain of the differences between them. For example, I've seen sites showing Emerson Combat Karambit and Emerson Commander Karambit. (Both priced essentially the same.) The black coated Combat looks pretty much identical to the Commander Karambit (BT coated) listed on another site.

I'm wondering if they're the same thing and either one site has mislabeled it "Commander" instead of "Combat" or did Emerson release two iterations of it with different names (and if so, what changed?). Both list 154CM blade and Ti liners.

The Combat Karambits is the much harder to come by emerson karambit folder- and is much more Clawlike- The Commander is more of a straight blade-

I have an Emerson Combat Karambit folder, but I just don't carry/use it often enough to give an accurate review. I haven't even managed to wear the coating off of the pocket clip. I think if I tried to use it, I'd start spinning it around and end up with one less finger. It's comfortable enough to hold though and sure looks mean. :D

Ended up ordering a Derespina production Model 10 from New Graham. Should arrive next week.

You will be very happy with your choice. I bought a model 10 back in August. I love it! It is an amazing value and seems like a much more expensive knife when handled. Rich knows his way around a kerambit!
Let us know what you think when it comes in.;)

if ya like 'bits ya will like the emerson they are as good/bad as any of them.

i dont like them myself FWIW.

Well I received it from UPS today and while I plan to add some pictures later, the summary of the initial reaction would be that it's a really sweet little karambit.

It grips nicely and has a little heft to it which is nice (the steel goes all the way through the handle to the ring hole - one piece).

It came well oiled and seems decently sharp.

The only gripe I have is with the "sheath" if one can call it that. It seems to be a piece of plastic that once I finally got the knife out of, I have been afraid to put back in for fear it will only damage the knife. I can't imagine anyone who actually used the karambit as a utility or every-day knife would ever dream of using a hard plastic-like sheath to put their knife in and out of all the time.
I'm not sure why the sheath isn't a piece of leather of some sort but I really dislike it and won't be using it. I may contact Rick to see if he makes a leather sheath for the model 10 that I could order from him.

yacoub,
That is Kydex. It is actually an excellent material. If you search around at various dealers and makers you will find most sheatsh are made of Kydex these days, at least for combat and edc type of knives. Leather is great but, it has been known to rot(being the skin of a dead animal) even thoug treated it can corrode although over a very long amount of time.

Kydex however, doesn't corrode at all. The only fault possible that I know of or have experienced is wearing down over time, which I have also experienced with Leather sheaths. Pulling the knife out often and back in often can, wear down the molded areas around the blade, even with leather.

I have cut straight through leather a couple times in my life by re sheathing a knife in a hurry.

I have never done that with Kydex. Trust your Kydex, use it without fear of hurting the blade or the sheath. It will serve you well.

The only regular damage for fixed blades and kydex that is without question are the Kydex scuffs.

Kydex because it's harder than leather will scuff the finish of your blade. Just a fact of life and especially with "user" grade blades, a non issue for the average knife carrying/using joe.

Thank you however, for your kind words! Glad you like the Model 10!
Regards,
Rich

RDT - Thanks for the info. I will give the Kydex a better investigation tonight after dinner. =)

so now I want another one just like it but with a slightly fatter handle (and finger indentations for quicker grip alignment) and about three inches more blade length... just for kicks. :D ;)
