I'm looking for a big strong knife to use outdoors that can do chopping and everything I can throw at it with ease.

I only want to spend around 150.00

And I'm thinking about a manix.

What do you guys think?

Thank you.

In that price range I would vote Ranger RD9... when you say big just how big? I hear chopper I think of a 10" blade

Are you looking for a folder or fixed? The Spyderco Manix is a folder. If you want a large folder the Manix is good but also here is a few more. Benchmade Rukus, Benchmade Skirmish, and I think for hard work a Cold Steel Recon 1 would do the trick. I think if I were going to I would buy two knives. One of the folders mentioned and for a fixed blade a Cold Steel Bushman. GOOD LUCK! Kevin :D

Look into Bark River Knife & Tool. You can't go wrong with a Barkie!! Lots of diff. models to suit your needs.

Zero Tollerance has both fixed and folders for that price and the uses you need it for. The 0100 and the 0121 are the fixed blades, and the 0300 series and the 0200 series are the folders. the folders are fairly easy to find for around $150 or so, the fixed blades, i am not so sure on the average price. i would think that it would be around that still.

Fixes blades you can always look at HI for under $150 they are great choppers.

Thanks for the input.

I'm looking into all of those.

Now I'm thinking one folder one fixed blade.

Any particular barkie that's the best?

The Bark River is a good idea. Let the fixed blade do the chopping.
No chopping with folders.

Yep, no chopping with folders.

Manix is very strong, and I'm a huge fan of the BM Skirmish.

If you're looking at a large fixed blade and a folder to "use outdoors that can do chopping and everything I can throw at it with ease", I recommend a tough multitool for the small knife e.g. the Leatherman Charge TTi as it will routinely come in handy on many unexpected occasions (at least it does for me). As for the fixed blade, the KA-BAR D2 Extreme Fighting Knife is a tough sumbitch, you can probably get both that and the TTi used for $150.

Swamp Rat Knife Works and Scrap Yard Knife Works also make great fixed blades for a reasonable price that are meant to be used and abused.

Got my vote too. I love my RD9.... GREAT knife. As a matter of fact, it is the only blade i kept that is over 6". It is price extremely reasonably for what you get. :) The RAT Cutley RC-4 is a great knife, but it isnt a huge blade, the RC-6 is the big guy on the RC block.

Of course there is always the option of getting a SP-8 from Ontario. Couple of people I know that have them love them.

I have heard that Cold Steel's Kukri machete has had great use for a inexpensive price.

- Ontario RTAK-II
- Ontario RAT-7
- RAT RC-6
- Kershaw Outcast
- Zero Tolerance 0100
- Cold Steel Laredo SK-5

The Manix is an awesome folder but it's not meant for chopping, you'll need a big fixed blade knife for that. Those options above are all great and all under 150 bucks (except the ZT which is a very high-end knife).

you might try going custom.
just a thought.. especially if you dont mind having the blade look a bit rough, i can make a tough, chopping knife in a day or two. what kinda handle did you want>?
thanks
~Chris
