Looking for Blanks

Hello, I’m incredibly new to the Blade Forums but I have been collecting knives and axes for years. It’s always just been a hobby.

I’m wanting to buy some blanks, I’m in no way ready to take on making a knife. I would love to try my hand at some handle and sheath making.

So to my question: Is there a reputable place to buy some quality blanks? Any form of steel really, I just want some steel that can keep an edge.

I have been having a blast reading all of the vast experience from BF, so I apologize for any ignorance on my part. I also apologize if this is not the thread for this post.

Lots of places sell "knife kits" and I think that is sort of what you are looking for....do a google on that and you'll see some options for blanks, likely with and without scales/pins.

Yeah I have many knife kits, I was wanting to get some blanks in a certain style so I could see what I could do.
I’m also trying to understand what makes a good knife compared to a trash one.

Meaning you've looked at websites that sell blanks and you're looking for something different?
If so, like what?

Exactly. Well I have never really found any blanks with a black oxide surface in any material.
Also, I am interested in D2 steel for testing and to experiment with. I have found some common manufactured types but I was hoping people with more experience in knife making and buying, could point me in some directions if I wanted to look.
I know there has to be some obscure knife locations the experienced users go to.

I also know most everyone makes their own knives, I’m not that talented and I feel like I’m still learning so much.

Woodcraft supply sells quite a few different knife kits. Obviously, they want you to put a handle on it since it's a wood working place. But they generally have a bunch of options as far as knifes types and finishes.

oh wow, I had never heard of this place! I will check them out. Thank for the help!

Lots of options out there...
But getting a black oxide finish is really pretty easy, albeit time consuming.

Here's a pretty awesome video on how to do it

Here's another

I have used these for blanks, most have forge/quench finish. Delivery about a week to ten days. Occasionally some really good new old stock from the old makers turns up. Of course it depends on the knife style you prefer.

I used to get them from puukkotarvike

I like a black oxide finish, I finish fine and use a good quench oil and it just turns up to the party. this is 80 crv2 at 840 austenitize.

If you are interested in the craft, I suggest finding the nearest knife making course to you. It will cost more, but you will see and work on the full process start to finish and probably leave with an awesome knife and experience. Don't blame me if you get hooked though!
