Need basic instruction on file work. Beginner level.

Thanks, James Brady MARS

Don't know of any books on the subject. It's pretty simple though. Buy yourself a Dremel with a flex shaft and some abrasive cut off discs. Get some masking tape and cover the part of the knife you're going to carve. Then draw the pattern you want onto the tape. It's alot easier to fix now than once you've started carving. Then just fallow what you've drawn. I've found that for scalloping, the edge on my 3" contact wheel works best. You can play with different size cut off discs to get different effects. Be sure to have a face sheild and dust mask when you're carving!! Take care!! Michael

should you wait untill after heat treat to do the carving or can you do it before heat treat? thanks, chris

Believe it or not, I still use a file to do file work. Of course, it has to be done before heat treatment. Sears sells nice little rat-tail files. They don't last long on stainless steel, but do a good job. With a little practice, a folder can be filed in about 20 minutes.

Even using the Dremel, I carve before heat treat. Anyone know of any possible structural problems this might cause during heat treat?? Take care!! Michael

i guess it's sort of obvious that if your going to use a file you dont want to wait until after heat treat. what i meant was do the guys that use cut off wheels and other grinding wheels wait until after heat treat.

thanks, chris
