Well, I figure it's about time for me to join the masses of gadget lemmings and get one of them new-fangled cell phone things. Here seems to be the choices I have around here, the Chicago area. We do travel to Northern Wisconsin to see family, and I once a year travel to various far reaches of the USA for continuing education. So, I want a phone that will work pretty much everywhere, is reliable service wise, and isn't going to kill me on a monthly basis. Which of these do you like and why?

most of my friends and family have verizon wireless so i went with them. i have only had a few dropped calls but they were due to going into a low lying area.

I had T-Mobile.

I hate T-Mobile.

I just recently switched to Verizon.

I love Verizon. :)

I love Verizon, great service due to all the towers, lame customer service at times , but if you contact Corporate, they will get the problem solved. In fact, I was given 3 treos because of a bad policy that came from corporate, when they saw my side, they sent out emails to every store, independent and corporate owned and made sure that my problem did not occur again to anyother existing customer. Sometimes it pays to go to the top.

I used to have Cingular (now AT&T) and never had a problem, but I am now with Southernlinc since no other carrier besides Nextel Sprint(not an option:thumbdn:) offers a ruggedized phone.

I went on a camping trip/wifes family reunion a couple years ago. As it turned out, one of her sisters had T-Mobile, one had Cingular, her brother had Nextel and I had Verizon with a Samsung phone.

We were in the mountains of West (by God) Virginia and my phone was the only one to get any type of service. Granted it was roaming but it was service none the less.

I currently work for DuPont and they've done a ton of research on cell phones for all their reps, salesmen, and employees "in the field". They found that Verizon had the best coverage so thats what they all get.

Verizon has served me very well for the past six years and I travel a lot on business. The only time it gave me a hard time was in Bowling Green, KY where I had to use another providers service. It was on Extended Network but worked fine. Depending on the phone Extended Network will only shorten the talk time/battery life.

Go with Verizon.

HTH,
Chris

Up until ATT took over Cingular, there were a few areas that didn't have cell service, northern PA being one.Since ATT took over the area has grown even more, you can check out their coverage area at www.att.com. I've been with the same provider for 10 year now through about 3 buyouts and the service keeps getting better.I also have a wireless aircard through them that I use for internet.

I have Verizon now...have had Nextel, Sprint & Cingular in the past. Verizon has the best coverage but still leaves a lot to be desired.

Speaking solely anecdotally:

Those I know with AT&T/Cingular have intermittent issues not with dropped calls but actually never receiving the calls in the first place. Their phone never rings but later they realize they have voicemail. It's certainly not an everyday occurrence, but it sometimes happens to them even in the urban area in which we live where coverage is allegedly perfect.

Those I know who are on AT&T/Cingular mostly admit they are still on it because of the phone model(s) they want being exclusive.

I personally use Verizon and really have never had any problems with it. Similar to other posters I have been able to get service in out-of-the-way areas in which my friends did not.

With all that said, it can certainly vary by state, city, etc. My experience is local to Baltimore, DC, and NYC. I can't speak on any sort of national scale and again I am only speaking anecdotally.

We've been happy with AT+T, used to be cingulair, the only hitch has been the phone store people can be hit or miss. They've been very responsive to fixing billing issues (Phone store signed us up for the wrong plan).

Our service is better (more bars hehe) then sprint/nextel. I have two friends with Sprint and I can only get them 50% of the time, I get the "Please wait while we're trying to locate nextel customer" and the guy is right across the street! JFC!

When I was back in rural Indiana, a few years back, sprint/nextel just plain wouldn't get a signal.

We just got new phones, slimmer flip phones, but the battery only lasts about 3 days, the older "brick" phones have much better battery life.

I love cingular until att took over. I always get drop calls in areas that are strong and no reasoning for the dropping. I had verizon and will go back once my two year contract ends. I heard good thing about t mobile, but other here are saying the oppsite.

i love verizon. you can also get this phone or the new version of it, http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2034585,00.asp

I have that phone. The newer version that is. Water-proof, dust-proof, shock-proof. Best phone I ever owned. I've had it for 3 months and not one scratch on it. The case can hold up to anything.

T-Mobile is horrible. Customer service sucks, the phones suck, and trying to get a signal is damn near impossible when you travel more than a few miles outside of your area. The plans they offer look and sound good but that is to cover their crappy service. I only had T-Mobile because it was all I could afford at the time. As the years passed it was harder to get out. Luckily I learned a few things about cellular technology in those years and I was able to get out of my contract without a penalty. I made the switch to Verizon and I won't look back. I have service anywhere, anyplace. Buildings, tunnels, out in the middle of nowhere; I can be sure that my call will get through.

I have been with Verizon since they were Bell Atlantic Mobile. I LOVE Verizon!!!

Verizon works great for me, like T.K.C. I've been a subscriber since the Bell Atlantic days (1995).

I travel in seven states and seldom have an issue with coverage.
