My Son's GPS got stolen from his car so I gave him my 2 year old TomTom 125. I only use a GPS like 2-3 times per year but do love the security of having one when I'm travelling.

Since I don't use it that often I don't really need anything too high tech with bells and whistles; just something accurate.

(I also have an Iphone. I guess that I could use that but I've never tried to download or use anything on it. Are the GPS apps really any good?)

I got rid of my Magellan GPS after discovering google maps navigation on my Android phone (Samsung Skyrocket). Seriously, it blew away the Magellan in terms of graphics and fast satellite acquisition. Give it a try. Its free.

The TomTom app for the iPhone works great and it's like 50 bucks. It'll eat battery life quicker than most apps but a car charger will take care of that. It certainly saves having yet another thing to carry or get stolen from the car.

The Google maps app on my tablet works pretty well. I don't use it often, but it is nice to see where I am and where I'm headed at any given time. There's an option to cache the area you're working with in case you lose your data stream. I also use a free app called GPS Essentials which covers most of the neat features of dedicated GPS, speed, distance to target, etc.

For something you don't plan on using that often, I'd start wiith the free stuff for your iphone and see if that meets your needs.

We had a cheaper Garmin. It worked OK most of the time, but we never bothered to update it.

Garmin for me. Go buy the cheapest or on sale Garmin at WalMart. Think I paid less than $100 for my 1100 NUVI last Summer AFTER my 340 gave up the ghost after years of great service.

Cellphone apps are fine IF you have service in the boonies.

I've had Garmin handhelds for years..brought me home on big water in the dark many times..need to learn to pick up decoys sooner.
