Just got this old sword from the island of Nias in Indonesia. The sword and scabbard are good, but the ball/talisman is damaged and needs repair. I am having a hard time finding anything except boar's tusks which are plentiful.

However I would really like crocodile, tiger, lion, bear fangs or claws.

I realize that some of these are now protected species and don't really know if these laws limit individuals buying from individuals. Perhaps a private email would be in order if you have something.

Anyhow, here are some pictures of an old Nias warrior sword.

In a repaired state, it should look like this link:

Thanks for your help

Hey Bill,

I did a little searching, and found more import warnings than anything else.

I'm sure you are expert in these matters, but I'd think the only way to get some of the items you mention would be from a curator of ethnographic weaponry (is that even a term?), who would have permits and such, and might work a deal with you to display the blade for a time, in return for slight repair of it's fetishes.

By the way, you have a working email thing? mindspring.com doesn't know you any more.

Be well and safe.

I finally figured out that one of the reasons some things carry value is precisely this. They are in limited supply legally...thus the value goes up due to rarity.

I have wondered if there is any sort of documentation, a paper trail to show the originality of materials, available to prove the legal status of such things?

Besides that, there would be all of that bad karma of endangering a species just for decoration. *There's* a load I wouldn't want to carry...

Bill the bear claws and fangs are still legal in most states I think. You would need to check you local laws to see about your state. They are still legal here in Oklahoma. You can get alligator teeth quite readily if they would substitute.
I've seen real lion skulls available so I would assume that the teeth are probably available as well.

The hide& fur link that was posted has or has had and/or will have some of the pieces you want. Grizz claws are damnably expensive, outrageously so IMO but it depends on how much value they would add to your piece if they were to be prohibitively so or not.
There's also a trading post in New York called Grey Owl that used too carry bear teeth and claws. You have too watch them though or they will send you pieces that are shorter than what you ordered.:grumpy: I called them on it and they replaced three bear claws for me but the hassle was uncalled for as I had paid for the large ones to begin with.
With hide&fur you get what you ordered and their descriptions are extremely accurate.:D

Thanks Yvsa,

Have an email off to "Hides and Fur" they may have what I want. But still no Tigers, Crocs (I think that they are on the 'endangered' list) or Lions. I'll keep looking.

Best
Bill

You're welcome Bill.:D

I dropped a couple of emails off too you but I had mailor daemons on both of them. Is not the address you have listed in your profile not any good?
The first one was about a lion's canine I found on ebay.It had like 23 hours to go at the time. The guy said he had three others for sale as well.

If you'll drop me an email I'll forward both of them too you.

A long time ago I purchased alligator teeth from a place that I think was called Boone trading company;price was reasonable I thought. They had oosic and tusks and all sorts of odd ball things. It's been at least 12 years, though, so I don't know if they are still in biz or what is available.
