Hail. I am a big knife guy, but I'd like to expand my user collection to include a hawk primarily for combat but useable for light utility chores. Ideally, the hawk would be under $175, preferably cheaper. I would like advice as to what style and maker/company, as well as ideal size and weight (I'm a strong, 6'3" guy) to purchase.
Thanks, Ivan

Peter Lagana studied Tomahawk designs for years and finally came up with the almost perfect design for an all around axe. The VTAC is all good for breaching, chopping, and defense if need be.

Indeed, it looks functional. I prefer more traditional looks, but at that price, it's hard to beat. It would also look better stripped, with a patina, and with a fire hardened ash handle.

If you prefer traditional styling, like me, you might want to look into Wolf Creek Forges traditional or spike hawks. Theyre very beautiful, and insane quality.

It looks like a longer wooden handle could be added
Way too short. The geometry of the head is good, but I could never get past the short stubby hobbit length handle.

I've been looking at Lisa's work for a while now. Now that she's back on here feet, I might just have to pick one up. What are here prices?

My general advice for someone unfamiliar with tomahawks is to start with a Cold Steel Trail Hawk. If you want to go a little bigger/heavier, the Pipe Hawk is a good option too. You can find them for around $30 pretty easily, and it will give you a better idea of what you like/don't like.

Second the Kangee. Fort Turner is currently backlogged to a severe degree. Dana's been having some health issues, but he's back in the game now with a long list to boot. Kangee is a great value for the money. I like Scouter's idea, starting with a cheap CS hawk. Some people have started with a CS hawk, intending to buy up afterwards, modded it to the Nth degree, and never did buy anything else.

I think the Sog hawks and voodoo are both great tools and are reasonably priced.
I prefer the shape of the voodoo and pommel on the handle but the kydex sheath that's available for the hawks are hard
To go past.

Yeah he is backlogged 8 weeks according to what he posted on his URL. Which means I only have a couple weeks of waiting to go :D give or take to get my RR spike hawk. I love his work. IMO it is worth the wait.

Maybe he will get caught up sooner. That would be a pleasant surprise. Or maybe not. It is what it is I suppose.

If you're willing to up your budget a bit, the Equinox Coronado / Vec Hawks are fantastic for 200-225. They are composite rehandled Cold Steel heads. The BUG hawks (customized Trail Hawk head) have to be handled to be believed and they do a wide range of handle lengths.
