I would like to add a fixed blade in damascus steel to my growing collection but know almost nothing about this steel except it looks cool.

I was hoping someone could turn me on to some good reading and maybe some good options.

features I am looking for:

4" or less blade
nothing too expensive as I would plan to carry it and use it from time to time. Can they be had in the $60 to $100 range???
Simple but elegant handle design. I like dark wood grain handles.
Beautiful enough to be worth living in the dog house for a while! lol!

I appreciate any help finding the right piece to add!

Mcusta has a line of damascus fixed blades, but they are about 2x the price range you're looking at. I think they are the MC-6 series. Kai has some great looking kitchen knives with wood handles and damascus, but not necessarily EDC thicknesses, although I'm Very tempted to purchase a high quality damascus paring knife and have a quality leather sheath made for it. It should work for MY EDC purposes, anyway.

For your price range, you may have a harder time finding quality knives, but it may be possible. I'm sure there are a few limited production knives by the main makers, like Case and Buck or even Bear and Sons, or possibly, at the lower end, Boker Magnum. It wouldn't hurt to search "damascus" for brand names on the big auction site, but be wary of "Custom" knives for less than $100, as they are most likely poor quality.

I've thought about the same thing. Shun and Mcusta blades are more san mai with damascus cladding than true damacus. Apparently san mai blades are made as such in order to increase strength and toughness of the knife, so it may be a doable option. I've used an ontario paring knife as a little pocket fixed blade and it did everything I asked of it, however it was a tough carbon steel. Next time I'm at the mall I'll have to give it a look over. The shun premier and shun perfect paring knife look like they'd do the job...
