Hello Claus!
In germany the names are:

for BG 42 = ?
for CPM-440V = CPM T 440 V
for CPM-420V = CPM 420 V
for M2 = 1.3343

The last one is a so called "Werkstoffnummer" given to all steels within a DIN (Deutsche IndustrieNorm) system. I think the CPM names are trading names. There must be Werkstoffnummern for them, too. But my actual steel book (Stahlschlüssel) which dates from 1997 doesn't give them. I thing that the BG 42 stuff is unknown here.

Greeting and happy christmas time!

Achim

Achim is right. M2 is 1.3343. All the others have no other name because those are the mill names for those products. M2 is available in plate form from Zapp in Dortmund.

BG-42 is made by Latrobe Stel in Latrobe, PA.

CPM steels are products of Crucible Steel. Other mills produce similiar powder metal steels, but these have other names.

Hi Claus !
Those names and numbers that You refeer to are the names used by Uddeholm Strip Steel , a swedish steel company . They also have some other good steels as AEB-L , MARSS 500 and the powder steel ELMAX .
Happy holidays with best wishes from Sweden !

Tak Anders.

Are the numbers used only by Uddeholm? i understood that it was an european standard?

I have talked to Uddeholm, and they recomended ELMAX as a substitute for CPM-420/440V, i dont know the other steels you mention, but i will check them out.

I took a look at your webpage, and the handles are some of the best animal scenes i have seen, extremely realistic.

God jul og et godt nytår.

santa clausDenmark,
(don't mind my joke, do you?)
i just bought some m-2, i can't wait to use it. does the stuff always come percision ground.

Godt fortsaettning og ett godt nytt år, Claus ! ( Happy holidays and a happy new year , for the international readers .)
Thanks for Your opinion about the scrimshaw , I will tell my " lady " that You liked her scrimshaw . Maybe we will meet You on some show in Denmark this summer ??
The numbers of the different steel are the official SIS numbers used in Europe , but the names are the one used by Uddeholm company . AEB-L is similar to Sandvik 12C27 and MARSS 500 is a development of the AEB-L steel ( first used as razor-blade steel .)
Best wishes from Sweden / Anders Johansson

Santaclaus, hmmmmm, i think i´ve heard that one before?? Joke as much as you can i have the b*lls to take it.

I will try to reach one of the danish shows this summer, maybe i will have something to show at that time.

If every manuf. has their own names for the same steel, how can anyone find their way about all these names? How is it in the US. are there any other names than AISI-names?

Have a nice millenium.
