I am new to this forum and knife making. I am all about DIY and Ive always loved knifes so i thought I would give it a try. I ordered a 2"x18" x3/16" piece of 1095. A 1 1/2" X10"x 3/8" black paper micarta & a 3/16" x 12" stainless rod. I got my design inspiration from a knife I'm sure most will recognize once they see my pics. I built this knife with a saws-all, 4" angle grinder, bench top drill press & hand files. I made a Riel Burner, got some fire bricks and canola oil. I almost used brine but after all that hand filing I was not about to take a chance with a brine quench. I was only able to get the top 6 1/2" of the blade hard. I couldn't keep the hole length of the blade heated. The knife is 17 1/2" long and the blade is 11 1/2" long. I needed another burner. I did an edge quench and for the top half I hardened, it came out very very hard. When it came to sharpening it, I was actually glad the hole blade wasn't hardened. And let me just say I need a belt sander. My next project is going to be a 2x72 belt sander. I am not starting another knife until I build my belt sander. All that filing by hand, especially on such a big blade was horrible. Anyway it was a lot of fun and i will be making more once i have my belt grinder done. I'm looking for some feedback to see how I did and what i can do better. I did a lot of research. I know 1095 wasn't the best choice because it is harder to HT. I'm gonna try some 1084 next. Here are my pics let me know what you think.
