Hey Guys, looking for some feedback on a knife i started making today, this one is 7.5" total length with 3" cutting edge, 1/8th thick 1084. Nothing to fancy here just trying to learn as i go, anyways what do you think? good design or no? what would you change?

EDIT: Added a new design down below.....

It looks sort of strange to me. That combination of drop point and tanto is not so common. If you made it as tactical, for stabbing: the blade is to wide in relation to its length. And the guard is not quite safe. If you made it for slicing (as the grind suggests): tanto is not the shape that comes to my mind... So I would call that blade shape ambiguous. ;)

Has a lot in common with some things I've been working out. A blade with the point located below the theoretical midline of the grip will be more easily introduced into the cutting media, and the curvature of the blade spine should allow the knife to be more easily choked up on for precision work.

A tanto point is stronger than some of the other grinds out there, leading to a more durable knife. Likewise, the pronounced finger choil leads to a more natural grip on the knife, further improving control. The only thing I would do differently is actually make the handle drop more, to follow the arc that a person's arm describes during a long cut.

Yes, it does look strange. But it ought to work a lot better than a lot of other knives out there.

Isn't that claim based on the "Americanized tanto grind"? This knife, if I'm seeing the picture correctly has a full flat grind (odd).

I guess I wonder, then, what the tanto thing is bringing to the party. What is the design intent? What is it "for"? (Maybe I'm not seeing the picture correctly.)

Do you find the handle ergos comfortable?

Regardless....looks like you are having a good time making stuff.

thanks for the input, the grind was to be partial flat and look like a tanto until i got a little wonky with the grinder so i had to go all the way up, i'm trying to make the best of it now! i added some jimping but i don't know if its going to be salvageable, so i started another design... what grind do you think would be best fot it?

The bottom one I like. Like the handle a lot. I'm a "full flat" kinda guy and it might work nice on that. Could work for "bushcrafty" stuff, could work in the kitchen...nice looking knife.

I like the odd shape. Good start. Are you making these for yourself or are you going to try and sell them? Keep it up

I dig the second one. That handle looks very ergonomic. I'd do a full flat grind on it as well. Throw some handle scales on there and it would be a really nice EDC.

well after a couple more hours messing around with the grinder this is where i'm at... fill flat ground both sides, rounded the spine and reshaped the blade, i think i like it, now i have to really clean it up add some jimping again and decide on some handles. i have a couple micarta pieces here so i might just use them... but not tonight, my thumbs are burnt and waterlogged!

Alright i'm back, the knife i thought would turn out didn't and the one i was going to scrap turned out to be perfect after a few revisions, so here it is so far...

That looks much more serviceable without the Americanized tanto shape.

I think you need to be a gold member to advertise stuff in your sig line.

thanks, yeah i figured it would be better this way. my sig is only offering a trade i'm pretty sure that's ok, i just cant list anything for sale till i upgrade.

i decided i liked the design that i had to scrap so much i made it again, this time no mistakes!, perfect grind and everything this time!
