Recently bought some nice folding knives in m390 steel, but realized I would need a bigger knife to do more dirty work. After researching different models and steels, I would like to have a custom knife in cmp10v steel, roughly 6-7 inches long and 1/4 of an inch thick, with possibly some micarta or g10 scales, since I cannot afford the safety of any nice wood handles in the field. Looking for some recommendations to different makers. I was looking into Phil Wilson, but keeping him as a secondary choice, since the handle designs he prefers are not of my liking. Would really like some recommendations to different production/custom makers.

I recommend Big Chris. He regularly works with high performance steels and makes some of the most comfortable Micarta handles I have experienced. I have several of his knives including a 10V below.

CPM 10V is best suited for slicing abrasive material for extended edge life. Not a hard use type steel at least in the upper range of hardness where it shines. If I was going for a 1/4" 6-7" blade I would look at 3V,Z-Wear, M4. You still get good wear resistance and strength with a little more toughness to benefit using 1/4" stock.

Another vote for Big Chris. I have one of his in S90V as I wanted corrosion resistance as well as edge retention.

If you want a combination of edge retention and toughness, I'd go with either CPM-M4 or CPM-4V at around 62-63.

I work with 10V quite a bit and and use Micarta and G-10 all the time. I'd be glad to make you a knife. I can also use any design/shape you might want (within reason).
Here is a link to a knife I sent to Jim Ankerson for testing. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...l-review-and-testing?highlight=darrin+sanders

If you're interested use the contact info. listed below to contact me. A phone call would be best as it would allow me to ask a few questions about the main use, allow me to explain my warranty, & give you a price quote.

I certainly could use a nice little slicer, as shown in that thread you linked. I'll keep you in mind the next time I go looking around for a nice, high performance knife. Thanks for the recommendations guys! :D
