Hi fellow BFers.

September is coming up and me and my father have our birthdays 3 days apart. This year I'd like to get him a nice knife to replace the buck 110 knock-off I see sitting on his desk at times. I think he'd like a traditional slipjoint or lockback more than a black, tactical modern folder. I lean that way myself. I planned to get two of the same knife, one for me and one for him, with a note offering a lifetime of sharpening and cleaning services for his. Something along those lines.

I'm on a pretty small budget. I'd like to keep the folders under 75$ each. I was looking at some of Queen's offerings in D2 / Cocobola and I was attracted to them quite a bit. I'm open to any suggestions as long as they're classy, not too expensive and readily available for me to purchase. Wood scales are favored, but not required.

Thanks for your time.

I've seen it. Might not be a bad idea, I was considering just getting him a 110 since he seems to like that style and probably had one at some point. He grew up in the southwest part of West Virginia I believe, so if anyone knows what knives would of been common there between 75 and 40 years ago, that'd probably help. I just want to find him something classy that feels good in the hand, made to be used and reminds him of his earlier days some.

If you are looking for something that is in the same basic design class as the 110 knockoff, the Alaskan Guide 110 from Cabelas would be a good choice. Another would be the Queen Mountain Man lockback. Check to see if Bill has them still with cocobolo at Cumberland Knife Works (it is no longer listed on his website, but it's worth a try. He has the birdseye maple for $58). Queen has dropped the cocobolo, and is now using birdseye maple. I prefer the cocobolo, others seem to like the maple better. If you really want cocobolo and Bill doesn't have it, there are a few other vendors out there who might still have it.

Case CV Trapper. Slightly more pocket-friendly than a 110, and you'd enjoy carrying one too (you did say you're going to get 2 matching ones, correct?).

The Queen Mountain Man is classier than the 110, in my opinion. I think it's a better choice.

Something from Schatt & Morgan would really flip his switch. Check out these sites:

Good luck!

p.s. - make sure you get tool steel (Queen's D2) or carbon steel (1095, 52100, Case's CV).

I like the look of that American Whittler model, and it's not very pricey either.

Just a warning; from what I understand, the Whittler is NOT easy to put together. In contrast, The lock back is far easier.

You each have half of the collection, you remain connected every day. When you and he carry the knives it's like sharing a special sort of feeling. Odd I know. But my son bought me one and I NEVER get dressed at all without putting it in my pocket, and knowing that many, many miles away he carries the other half of the set makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Sentimental Old Man,
Daddy
