Hello Folks,

I would like to know about all the folders available (custom or production) where the handle fully encloses the blade in the closed position...the Masters of Defense CQD comes closest (see pic below) to what I am searching...obviously, Balisongs (and those "tri-fold" things) and OTF autos fit the description but I was thinking about "regular" folders

It seams to me that you have elimitated the catagories you would most likely find them in. With out atleast as much blade showing as the MOD above there would be no room for a thumb stud or other opening mech. With out part of the blade showing you would be limited to "flicking" it open. I don't think any designeres want to give up the utility that you have with a thumb stud.

EXCELLENT POINT (why didn't I think of that? :o )...following that logic, knives equipped with a "flipper" (e.g. Carson M16) could conceivably be constructed that way...hmmm...

A few factory one handers where the handle fully encloses the blade are:

Buck Crosslock
Gerber Applegate Combat Folder
Gerber Covert Applegate
Ka-Bar/Dozier Thorn
CAS Iberia Starship
While the handle of the SOG Pentagon Elite does not enclose the blade 100%, it does enclose most of it.

Fantastic! This is just the type of thing that I am looking for...

Now, a follow-up question...but first, some background info...my question arose out of my love for folders designed to be used as impact weapons (e.g. CQD, Wortac, Perfigo etc.)...I have found that when you grip them tightly, the top-edge of the blade can dig into your hand...I was looking for a way to get around that problem...the Gerber certainly has that covered...so, do you think that the handle on the Gerber is "substantial" enough to be used as an impact weapon?

keep the suggestions coming...

Thanks,
RL

The Buck Strider nests most of the blade within the handle, and the portion that protrudes is straight across, with no hotspots. It is definitely tough enough to use as an impact weapon. It may be too big around for your hand but I find it quite comfortable.

That all depends on the size of your hand. I believe the closed length of the full-sized gerber is 5.75" and the covert is 4.9", so it should work, as long as you don't have paws the size of dinner plates. :)

The Buck/Strider would indeed be a great impact weapon. I have carried one in my jacket/vest pocket and it is a very natural motion to reach in and grasp the knife in that manner. It helped mine when I rounded the edges of the G-10 and took some of the "bite" off the handles themselves. Made it much more comfortable to grab and lessened the chance of the handle scales cutting into the web on my hand.

Good call Esav!:D

Check out the Buck Odyssey. They have them at Lebaron's, both the #186 and the #182 (CF/ats-34).
