I am looking to make my first forray into fixed blades, I want a tough knife that is in the $100 or so range that has a 5-7" blade and would be good for fieldcraft etc. I like the Scrapyard yard guard (http://www.scrapyardknives.com/knives.htm) anyone own one? Never heard of SR-77 steel though. Any other recomendations?

In the 5 to 7 inch range I would recommend a Fallkniven S1 or A1. You should be able to pick these up for around $100.00 or slightly more. The Ranger RD 7 is on my "wanted" list for this year.

A friend just sold his RD for a Barkie Canadian SPL. Something to think about.

In addition to the others, a CS Recon Scout is a very nice knife in this range, especially if you can find one in Carbon V.

if you wanna somekind of prybar you can try a cold steel recon tanto or SRK

+1
i've got the RT and it has served me well. i don't know if i'd call it a pry bar, cause it's one hell of a cutter/stabber too, but it's one of the only knives i've owned that i won't hesitate to pry with :D

a true work horse, but light and quick handling enough to double as a fighter, should it need to.

I am really leaning toward the Ranger RD7 but I do like the looks of the Scrapyard Yard Guard, what is the difference in steels, anyone know? (5160, SR-77)

Steel, I don't know, never tried a Scrapyard.

What I know it that you can have a Ranger by the end of the week. I don't think you can say this about Scrapyard.

From what I heard, both knives are great. What kind of handle do you want? That's the biggest difference between those two IMHO.

As far as the Scrapyard Yard Guard goes you'll probably end up paying more than the $120 they go for on Scrapyard's site. Scrapyard doesn't have stock very often, and when they do it sells out right away. I have one on its way right now that I paid $140.00 for from a guy on another forum, and I saw one go for $228 the other day on Ebay. SR-77 is a slightly modified version of S-7 Shock Steel, which is what they make jackhammer bits out of. Scrapyard heat treats it for 40+ hours, hardens it up some, and there you have it.

I dont know, Bark river has never done anything for me, they are made about 1.5 hours or so north of me but I guess I like more of a tactical look

That Scrapper is a great choice. It is also one of the only Scrapyard that is priced at retail on the secondary market. Most are quite a bit over the retail price. I had a Hookguard and loved it but now I have the awesome DFLE.

Fallkniven and bark River are the 2 other companies I usually recommend.

I am getting interested in Rosarms knives but don't have one yet.

Blackjack have a couple really good deals. Their Grunt is a heck of a buy.
