ok so ill put out my criteria first

i want a 2-3.90 inch blade (a little bigger or smaller is fine)

i prefer liner and no assist, but am interested (no hands on) in the Axis lock

i want a good to great quality steel that will hold an edge and the like

price range of about $30-$70 or if you can find a really great knife for cheap somewhere

i want a small knife profile not too beefy of a grip

i have previously owned a SOG flash 1 but lost it and want something new

have looked at the BM 940 (a little too pricey), 550HG (big grip), Spyderco Tenacious (heard not great steel), caly, para 2 (on the expensive side), CRKT M21 (AUS 8 not too great).

Thanks.

The BM 943 is a great knife, but you can get good knives for less. Look at the Spyderco Manix 2 and Delica 4 (and the ZDP-189 version), Kershaw RAM and Speedform 2. It sounds like the Speedform 2 is exactly what you're looking for. Meets all the criteria and has pretty much the best steel you can get at that price.

+1 for the manix 2 and delicas...The manix lock kind of resembles the axis lock as well.(I actually prefer the manix lock)

In your price range, the kershaw speedform 2 would be a good option. If you can swing the extra money, the spyderco para2 would be my pick, great EDC knife IMO.

If the benchmade 550 has a big grip for you, forget about the manix2.

I think if you spend a bit more and get a Para 2 you will be more satisfied in the long term, the knife is just about perfect

A kErshaw Skyline is a very nice, high value EDC knife, much trimmer and smaller than the Para 2, this one is in Damascus, but the regular blade steel is pretty decent

ok, so i've narrowed down to between the Para2 or the Sage Carbon Fiber. thoughts? (btw ive never heard of the speedform before and how good compared to the spydercos is it.

I own both and they are great knives. The Para 2 is more noticeable in pocket and a "harder use" knife with great ergos and a good grip...The sage pretty much disappears in pocket and the carbon fiber while looking nice is also pretty grippy with great ergos...I personally couldn't decide between the two so i got both and love em both..so sorry if that wasn't much help

Both the para2 and the sage are really good knives. For most edc purposes though, I'd probably recommend the sage. Just big enough to fit nicely in hand, great blade profile for utility use, great looking and feeling CF scales and that wire clip is really nice. You really can't go wrong with either though

here is a pic (from another member) of the para2 and sage2:

get the para 2 (if you can handle sharpening S30v)
the delica would be great though it is a back lock ( VG-10 takes an awesome edge, easy to sharped)

154CM I think is your best bet for edge retention and ease of sharpening (griptilian, however a bit on the wide side for your tastes)

I recommend the minigrip. The handle isn't really as wide as it looks, about as wide as a standard cellphone.

curse you for that sexy picture. This has gone on my ever expanding list of knives I want :D

Speedform's a great knife; don't discount it because you haven't heard of it. It's newer than either of the other two, but it's made by Kershaw, so you can expect good quality and better warranty service. The steel is also better than either of the other two options. The other two options are good, too, though.

ok so it's been a month still haven't made a decision but wanted to revisit my criteria so i'd rather have a 3 1/4 to 3.90 inch blade, s30v steel or comparable edge holding steel, liner lock, non-flipper, slim grip profile, low riding but strong pocket clip.

Depends on what you want to spend:

For under $70, get a buck vantage pro large (about $55)

If you can bump your price range up to $100, get a spyderco para2.

Jim has some good suggestions. I might add a Spyderco ZDP-189 Endura for your consideration.
