Looking for Help Dating Older Bucks

I have been working on updating a ton of information in a database for my collection and, while I haven't gotten to them yet, I know I have a couple older knives that I will need help dating. I am familiar with, and have a copy of, the year marks used on the tang stamp starting in 1986.

I know prior to 1986 the factory didn't "date" the knives but that there were a variety of different stampings. The "dots" on the 110's - different script for the word "BUCK" - the addition of the "USA" - different number of lines, etc. What I don't know is when the different markings were used, or changed? If anyone, or two, or three of you, who have been collecting longer than I have, could help shed some light on this, I am sure I won't be the only one here that would appreciate the history lessons.

On the same note, the chart I have for the yearly tang stamps does not show the "anvil" the factory is using this year, but a squared "U" for 2002. I know because this is Buck's Anniversary year they went with the special stamp. How, if at all, is this going to affect next year's stamp. Will it still be a "T" as indicated, or will the square "U" move down the chart?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Dan,

Check some of your back issues of the club newsletter. Joe Houser wrote an outstanding article on 110s which will help tremendously with dating 110s at least. I believe his article was in the Feb. 2002 newsletter.

Thanks John,

Now that you mentioned it, I do remember reading it and I know I still have that issue in my files. Funny, sometimes you get so locked into looking for something that you forget the resources already at hand....

Thanks John! :D
Dan,
The anvil mark replaced the mark originally planned for 2002. The chart is correct for the remaining years shown. 2003 will NOT be changed.
Hope this helps.

I read a post earlier from Jeff Hubbard regarding the "T" for 2003. Now I need to go find one of the Centennial 110 with the "T" on the back of the blade.....Just when we think we know the rules, you guys change the game!!! Its one way to keep us on our toes.

As I re-enter my knives into my new database I'm sure I will have more questions. Reading Joe's article again, I should be okay with my 110's. I know I have some older 300 series as well as the older fixed blades. If I need more help - I'll yell !!!!

Thanks again......
