Looking For any and all help for getting started on build my first tomahawk pipe. Knowing nothing about building one and countless hours of web searching to find designs that might be close to my liking. Only finding that the ones I liked were far out of my affordability range. I'm striking out to try to build my own. I recently purchased the ( Instructions & Hints For Assembling Pipe tomahawks.. By Gerald Gutchess & Alan Gutchess) I'm leaning more towards the English Pattern style head "not really sure of bowl style or handle design yet". Knowling nothing of metal working, heating, metal types or much of what I read so far. Not not having a shop of anything out of the normal everyday person of small hand/power tools. I'm leaning towards such pre-made kits from such places as: R.E. Davis or Track Of The Wolf. Unless anyone else knows a better place. I first found this site on one of my many web searches and come across a 2006 talk on about the same subject. Figuring maybe this was the best place to start. So I'm open for any and all suggestions or any type of help that can be offered.

I just received the pipe head and handle for assembling my own from Track of the Wolf, I'm in the process of fixing it to my liking aesthetically. So far no complaints, the curly maple is absolutely beautiful and the head seems pretty solid.

hey El. what type of head did you buy and please let me know how things go with it. I do like some one tracks handles better then davis. But davis has a nice kit set. also let me know how dealing with track was.

I ordered the English pattern head, it's pretty nice for a wax cast. You've got to clean off the edges where the two sides of the cast meet, I just filed them down pretty quick and ended up liking the large square bit at the top where they poured the steel in and incorporated it into my design. It's got some heft, so I think it'll do pretty well in using for light chopping (which is always a nice addition to a pipehawk, multi-use is something I'm fond of). Working with the people at Track was really awesome, they got everything out to me in 3 days.
The hawk head came with a light gun-kote I guess to help prevent rust during transport, all in all, I'd say the purchase was worthwhile and I'm more than satisfied with what I got (I also got a pewter trinket to place into the wood)

Thanks for writting back and letting me know how things are going with your new hawk. Question when you got started with this project did or do you know anything or alot about hawks. This is going to be my very first one and I was looking for any hints or tips on them. I like track because they offer so many more option with haft then davis does. I really like the carlos handle but it's not drilled, so I'm not sure if I want to try to drill a haft as my first one. But thank you for leaving me know how your transaction went with track.
