Looking for hydraulic press plans

a hydraulic wood splitter makes a heckuva dual purpose tool  :D

Those kids at Mad Dwarf Workshop really do some nice work.. inspiring, to me at least. I wonder how many tons that splitter is.. and how expensive it is new. Most of the splitters I've looked at locally to approach 30+ tons with decent speeds are well over $1500.. For not a lot more I could buy a proper forge press. I really want a press, but the cost is prohibitive to me.

sd, a bit of a old thread- don't know if Stu hangs out here much now.

FYI, check this link out. Eric Fleming did a WIP of his press build, it's awesome. He offered CAD plans and a wiring schematic, I think they might still be attached.

Thats a pretty cool thread! Curious tho Ive never welded and just wondering how hard it is to weld those big I beams. Do you need a special welder or something for somethign that size?

Eric is using a TIG welder in that thread.

You can use a really basic Arc welder for a couple or few hundred $ used.
They seem to last forever and go from person to person.

AC only is common.
AC-DC is nicer

If you can buy it in the hardware store & plug it into a 110v 15 amp outlet; as a rule I'd leave it in the store.

7018 is a strong rod, a bit tricky to learn to start as it tends to stick, but clean welds with good strength.
It' makes it easier if you can move everything into the flat position.

An automatic start electric helmet is worth having.

It's worth trying to weld if you want to do a press build.

Or you could just clamp and bolt it up and get it welded by a pro.

I've been to there shop. It's a 20 -25 ton I think they said. They also use a Chiliforge Tabasco forge to. Man I want one of those :) maybe a late christmas present when tax check roles around :)
