I'm making a knife for my step-son and he picked out the following wood for the handle material. However, I have no idea what it is. It's very light and has some luminescence in certain lights. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm no expert, but looks a lot like koa. Not much else gets that luminous look that I can think of. If it is really light weight might be chocolate heart albizia?

Thanks for the replies.

I was originally thinking Koa. But as you mentioned Strix it's very light weight. I've never heard of Chocolate Heart Albizia before. I looked it up and it certainly looks like it. And it also looks a bit like the Kauri wood you mentioned Natlik. However according to the Wood database, Kauri is rarely found outside of New Zealand. Quilted Maple? I think that might be the best possibility. It is the most abundant of the three. And cutting it on my little saw was neither easy nor hard. I haven't worked with it any further since my initial post, so we'll see how it works when I start finishing.

The grain really looks like koa. Some koa is very light colored..

Afzelia, Curly Myrtle, kauri, Maple. Many other curly grain woods are all possibilities, but I am going with koa.

Okay...Koa it is.He'll be happy with that. He did his Marine basic training in Hawaii. Thanks for the input everyone.
