I am looking for information, preferably on the web, about the history of American knives. I'm interested in getting a feel primarily for the types of knives used on the American frontiers, from colonization to the "wild" west.

Does anyone know of any good websites about this topic? Any good books would be worth mentioning too.

Thanks,

Look for collections on the net, and checkout some of the muzzleloader forum boards and ask.
Talk to Chuck Burrows, and you are welcome to ask me questions.

What Wick said and Wick is VERY knowledgeable about the subject.....as for inof on the net - there is some out there, but if you are really serious about learning the subject than books and other printed research are absolutley necessary to get a more complete view of the subject - a subject that is not a simple one and where what where and when are a major part of understanding what really was and what is myth or Hollywoood fantasy - neither are better or worse, but there is a difference between what was and what may have been when studying "period" knives and sheaths. There is also exacting reproduction and there is historically inspired.

Wow, awesome information!
I figured that web resources would be almost non-existant. I guess I will have to start saving up for some books.

From what little I have found online the biggest problem I have so far just looking at the trade knives from the early-mid 1800s is that they all have fairly ugly (to my eye) proportions. I pretty much expected to find mainly butcher knife looking designs, but I had hoped to find some gems that I could re-interperate into something pleasing to the modern palate.
Maybe in some of the books mentioned I can find some more variety.
