Looking for info on medeival-style battle axes

I'm new to BF although I've had threads show up frequently when searching for info on knives, etc. I hope this is the right place to post this. I know that battle axes aren't the main focus of this forum, but was hoping someone might have some advice. I'm looking to collect some for display pieces as a gift to a friend. So far, all I've found are in one of three categories: (1) actual antiques that are way beyond my budget (2) top-end replicas that would be fully functional but are again more than I'd like to spend or (3) very cheap junk that don't even look good in the pics.

My question is, does anyone know of a source that produces any that look good and don't cost more than $150-$200 or so each? I don't expect usable for that price, just would like for them to look as if they could be used. A little accuracy, too -- leather, not vinyl, carbon, not stainless, etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recently picked up a Browning Outdoorsman axe with hickory handle that looks amazing. I haven't tested it out yet but with 1055 steel, it shouldn't do too badly. Cheers!

You might find something you like at Wulflund, and have one of the blacksmith members of Bladeforums make a similar one for you (if you don't want to have it shipped from the Czech republic).

Just yesterday I came across this one on a forum member's page, that is a real full sized axe, and also looks like it wouldn't be out of place on the Bayeux tapestry. http://www.baryonyxknife.com/faitfeaxe.html

If you're after something with at least a spike or two sticking out of it somewhere, have you checked Museum Replicas? These are perhaps on the lower end of the quality spectrum, but still above the cast decorator junk, and look the part. http://www.museumreplicas.com/c-28-battle-axes.aspx

An even larger one HERE or for a one-handed version, HERE. They're very nice axes. :)

Now you have me trying to rationalize why exactly I need one of these. :)

If I could only convince myself that there's a real danger of Saxon churls swarming over my balcony some morning.....

Thanks for all the help. Probably go with Museum Replicas for the gift. Problem is, after looking at all of these others, I want one or two for myself. Just haven't decided on the specific one(s) yet

Feral Saxons are a real problem up our way. The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife can't set enough traps to keep the population under control and there are more reports of them encroaching into residential areas every year, especially during the peak of the raiding season. :D

Thank you for that. First time I laughed today.

So instead of Indian Summer you endure Saxon Summer?

That’s really old school.

It's the Vikings you really have to watch out for Viking season is approaching.

There is always the threat of Zobair Barry jumping in your balcony, grabbing your knives and rubbing them into the concrete!! A legitimate threat guys!!

(Can't believe nobody has brought that thread up yet- shows there is always a legitimate threat to defend against!!) :-)

Be warned if you have never read this before:
