Hi. I'm am looking for information on a small MOP lockback I received as a gift and carry as my Sunday-go-to-meetin' knife. I'm specifically looking for the model name/number and year of manufacture, if possible. Thanks for your help!

Pipe, Thats the 507 Ultima I . Buck first brought it out in 1980 with a stainless frame and 440C blade . Later (81-93) when the custom shop was up and running they did many which yours is one as those are stamped in that manner . Hang on to it, those are hard to come by . Somebody likes you . Welcome . DM

After about 6 mos. of operation the custom shop started mirror polishing the blades and using that stamp . Does yours have any numbers on the other side of the blade ? A handsome model . Thanks for showing us . DM

David-
Thank you for the replies. I appreciate your time.

The reverse side does not have markings of any kind.

Ok, thanks Pipe . Thats one clue down . Realize these 'custom shop' knives are usually one of a kind sort of knives . So, its difficult to determine an exact year made and by whom . No other knife company had and operated a full custom shop where customers could order a knife of there design . Your particular knife was also offer in a standard production knife with a different stamp . But the rest was the same without a mirror polished blade . The profits of the custom shop didn't meet expectations and hence it was closed . But its affects of pulling up the entire line were greatly felt .
I know and have chatted with most of the men from the custom shop and can tell you they are very fine knife craftsman as well as good fellows . This is a long shot but put your knife under bright light and look in the blade well for any initials . Sometimes 'Mac' would put his in odd places like that . Or on the inside of the lock bar . Thanks . DM

David-
No hidden initials, as far as I can see with a lighted magnifier -very clever of "Mac," though!

Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with me.

Ok, I'm getting low on possibitilities . However, I talked with one of those craftsman about this and he suggested ; 1) In the early days of the custom shop a craftsman would walk out in the plant and take a knife off the assembly line back to the custom shop and jazz it up . In those first few months the knives were stamp 'Buck USA' later 'Buck Custom USA' like yours and later 3 or 4 numbers . At about 6mos. the craftsman decided to start putting their initials on them usually in the choil area . Mac, resisted this move and if he put any at all he'd hide them . 2) Your knife most likely is one of these . Either before the initials and after the Buck Custom stamp or one of Mac's with no initials . Thats my best postulation . DM

David-
You have given me some great information and some wonderful trivia.

I am truly grateful for your time. Thank you!

Your welcome . You guys have been very good to me over the years as well . A fine bunch I enjoy being around . DM

Pipe, I've since went back in my old issues of the Buck Collectors newsletters and reread John Forseman's article written in 2005 . Who collects those models and knows alot more than me . To ; 1) make sure I wasn't giving you incorrect info. and 2) to make sure I hadn't missed any items . Now, I think your knife could be within a year or so of my pervious statement . Something, like late 1981- 1982 and I would'nt think any later than 1983 . The blade steel is 440C . Enjoy it . DM
