Howdy everyone, I'm new to the forum but I'm not very new to blades. I've been bladesmithing for about 4-5 years now as a hobby. I stumbled across a puukko at an antique market that was labeled as a "Fisherman's knife," I'm about 80% sure it's a puukko, and it's in pretty rough shape. Scratches cover the blade and its a butter knife in terms of sharpness. In other words, it's seen better days. Handle could use some oil too, but before I do anything to it I want to know more about it's maker/manufacturer and anything else really. Thanks- Josh

You will need more photos, at least one of the whole knife and if it had a sheath, then a photo of it too. Finnish script is notoriously hard to read, especially when worn like yours is, but it does look to be a puukko. John

John, thanks for the reply. I went with my gut and cleaned the blade and oiled the grip, after a quick buffing hopefully it will be easier to read. Value is of no importance to me, seeing as how I've never owned a "vintage" puukko and I'm more than likely never going to sell this knife, just wanted to make that clear. Anyways here are some more pictures, sorry about the bad quality all I have for photography is my cellphone.

(If you have any suggestions for better pic quality I'm all ears.)

It is definitely a puukko, but I cannot read the script. Sometimes if you put talcum powder on the blade, then wipe it off, the script will stand out better. Also try posting it on Bernard Levine's forum, as folks there like Thomas Linton, are pretty good at deciphering Finnish script. John

It is an old puukko from the 1920-1960 period. Maker is Eino Lahdensuo of Lapau, Finland. Good knives, I have several by him.

Wow, right before I was going to ask someone about this in Mr. Levines section of the forum! Thanks Rich, I'll be sure to ask any questions of the same type in the proper section of the forum next time. And thank you John for referring me to that section.
