I've been considering obtaining a fighting tomahawk and expanding my skills training to include CQB hawk training...

Without a doubt I want an ATC hawk... but as I know little if anything about this type of battle I have a few questions...

I am sorely tempted by the Next Generation Ranger but its price gives me slight pause...

I'm also tempted by the Tactical Grade Vietnam hawk...

  • The physical differences between the two are relatively apparent... but which design works best in CQB?
Which is better for non-combative tasks (i.e. chopping and the like)?
Is the slightly longer hand of the Next Gen Ranger a good thing or a bad thing?
Which is better for CQB... the curved main edge or the straight main edge?
In short what are the pros and cons of each outside of price?
BTW... the description of the Next Gen Ranger includes a lanyard hole but I don't see one in the pic... does it come predrilled for a lanyard or would I be forced to cross my fingers and drill my own?

IMHO the next gen. Ranger would be the one to get for chopping or throwing.

For fighting the Veitnam Tactical is amazing

just my thoughts. You should go ahead and call Andy give him your credit card and buy both. Also get a shoulder rig for the veitnam hawk.:)

Here is a quick break down of the two. The Next Generation Ranger has a larger cutting surface therefore it is better suited to chopping and throwing. It has a slightly longer handle wich is good for both chopping and CQB. The longer handle alows you to gain more leverage on an apponent and also protect more of your forearm if you are gripping the hawk by the head. The larger size of the Next Generation can make it more difficult for some people to get comfortable using it in a CQB application.
The Vietnam Tomahawk is well suited for chopping and throwing. It is also and excelent CQB weapon. Its smaller size makes it very easy for most people to use it comfortably in a CQB application. However the shorter handle does not protect as much of your forearm when holding the hawk by the head.
Both hawks are great in all applications. It really is in personal prefferance. Do you like more or less protection on your forearm. Do you like a curved cutting edge or straight. For someone just starting out I would recomend the Vietnam simply because of its size and it is very user friendly. I would get comfortable swinging it around in all aplications and then move up to the Next Generation Ranger Tomahawk.

Yes they all come pre-drilled with the lanyard hole.

BobLee, I've got the same dilemma you do. Think I'm going to try to make it to the NYC show and check 'em out in person.
