Hi, I'm looking for information on some old Western knives, the Western F48A (stacked Plastic and aluminum handle), L48AB6 (Stacked Leather Handle) and anything else in the x48x series. I would like to know what steel was used, dates the series was made and handle veriations. Years ago, I was given what I think was a F48A with a stacked Plastic and aluminum handle and aluminug Butt and guard. A few years later I lost it on a camping trip in 6' of snow. I loved the style, the size, shape and feel of that knife and plan on getting some more when I have the money. Wish Camillus/Western would bring it back. Thanks

Heber Ellsworth

Mr. Ellsworth,
Tom Williams, our CAMILLUS and WESTERN historian, will be in the office in the next day or so, and he will be better equiped to answer your questions regardsing older knives. I'll make sure Tom Sees your post.

Thanks for the interest!

Thanks Will, I'm planning on starting a collection of that style fixed blade and possibly some classic folders in the near future. Having information will really help.

Model #F48A is a "Black Beauty" knife that was first offered around 1960. This knife featured a 4 3/8" blade with a blood groove, alternating polished aluminum and fiber disc handle and aluminum butt.
Each knife came with a jet black embossed leather sheath.
Model #L48ABG is a modified version of the #L48A that has a blood groove. This knife features a 4 3/8" blade and a stacked leather washer handle. This knife is shown in the 1950 Western Catalog.
If you e-mail me your postal mailing address, I will send you copies of several older Western catalogs showing these two knives along with numerous other fixed blade knives.

Thanks Mr. Williams for the reply, you have email. :) BTW, do you happen to know what steel the blades are made out off? Thanks again,

There is no mention in the catalogs as to the steel used in the blades of your two knives. A steel commonly used by Western at this time was high carbon chrome vanadium steel.
I will be out of the office until the first week of January and I will
mail you the information then. Have a Nice Holiday!
