Looking for information on a short sword

Hello. Now I'm not going to be able to describe this very well because I've never seen it in person. I just bought it over the net. I'm not sure as to the maker or time period. The blade is 15 1/2 inches long and has the markings of 3888 on handle and 341 under the handle. That's all the auction had in it regarding to specifics. The guy said he had it appraised and the appraiser said it was pre Spanish War era. It only set me back $50 bucks so if it's a fake or junk it's not that big a deal (of course I'd be happier if it wasn't). I figured it was a pretty good gamble. Hopefully someone has seen one before. Try posting this in the Bernard Levine forum. BTW, to me, it looks like a rehandled bayonet,..... But I could be completly mistaken.
